Several young horses who showed winning form on Britain’s point-to-point circuit last season are set to run at Chepstow today.

The Welsh meeting, which continues tomorrow, is widely regarded as the start of the winter jumps season, although weather conditions have meant the track has dropped its plan to include steeplechases and is staging all-hurdle race cards.

Two divisions of a novices’ hurdle get the meeting underway and in the first leg (1.22) No Hard Feelings and Herbies Sock will be out to build on winning point-to-point form. No Hard Feelings won three points last season for Evie Toozer’s stable in Wales, but has since joined Matt Sheppard and will be ridden today by Gavin Sheehan. Sheppard’s jockey son Stan rides Herbies Sock for trainer Tom Lacey having finished third on debut at Maisemore Park before scoring at Chaddesley Corbett in April.

He was offered for sale at Goffs UK’s Spring Sale, but was knocked down to vendor and has since been sold to new owners while remaining in Lacey’s care.

Short Sell, who was placed at Alnwick before winning at Dalton Park for Fran Poste’s Warwickshire stable subsequently joined Dan Skelton and made his debut for the stable in May when finishing unplaced. He lines up in Div II of the same novices’ hurdle (1.57) as does the Lacey-trained Hive Runner (pictured top of page nearest camera), who looked a good prospect when making a winning start at Larkhill in February under Sean O’Connor.

Chepstow’s Saturday card concludes with a bumper for mares (5.10). Farm Assured, who won a match at Kilworthy for Chris Barber’s stable in March has since been transferred into Sam Drinkwater’s yard and is set to line up.
