There is plenty of interest for fans of British point-to-pointing as the jump racing season goes up a gear over the next three afternoons.

GB Pointing Bonuses are up for grabs with a couple of potential winners making their debuts under rules, while Britain’s men’s and women’s champion riders James King and Gina Andrews are both in action at Cheltenham today, as is Lucas Murphy, won took the novice men’s championship last season.

Murphy claims 7lb when riding Al Gasparo in the William Hill Epic Boosts Handicap Hurdle (1.15) for Kayley Woollacott – the seven-year-old won five point-to-points last season when trained by Woollacott’s husband Josh Newman – and Traprain Law for Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore in the squareintheair.com Handicap Chase (3.35). Traprain Law is owned by Murphy’s grandfather, Raymond Anderson Green.

King and Andrews line up in today’s closing race at Cheltenham, the Chapel Downs Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase (4.45). Andrews teams up with Youdecide for Ben Pauling, while King partners Little Ledgend for Olly Murphy’s stable.

Introduced last season with financial backing from the Horserace Betting Levy Board and sponsorship from Tattersalls and Goffs, the GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series involved 15 races for four- and five-year-olds. Winners bred in Britain who went on to land developmental hurdles or chases would gain their owners a £25,000 bonus, those bred overseas £15,000.

Kingofthefrontier, who broke a frontier when becoming the first GB Pointing Bonus winner to score under rules and land a £25,000 prize (Tom Milburn)

Five-year-old Kingofthefrontier scooped £25,000 when winning a maiden hurdle at Southwell in June for John Dawson’s stable having  taken a leg of the GB Pointing Bonus Series held at Charm Park a few months earlier. Kingofthefrontier steps up in grade today when tackling the Gr.2 Oddschecker Novices’ Hurdle (3.00) at Cheltenham.

Another potential bonus winner has been declared for tomorrow’s Cheltenham card. Woodstock Octo, who won a race in the series at Dunsmore in November for trainer/rider Newman, and who remained unbeaten in seven outings during the season, runs in the novices’ hurdle (1.45). He too has been transferred across to Woollacott’s stable for his hurdling debut.

Another GB Pointing Bonus winner from last season, Micky Haller, runs in the bumper which closes tomorrow’s card (4.40), although on this occasion he is not in line for a bonus as it is not a hurdle or chase. Micky Haller was yet another winner for champion trainer Newman, although he was subsequently sold at Tattersalls Cheltenham’s Festival Sale for £75,000 to Dan Skelton and will be making his first start for his new yard.

Titi Montmartre (Ed Doggrell) who won at Alnwick and could head to Aintree on Sunday (Grace Beresford)

Declarations for Sunday’s card at Aintree will be known later today, but among six-day entries is Titi Montmartre, who is pencilled in for the maiden hurdle (1.15) with Sean Houlihan booked to ride. Winner of a GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden race at Alnwick in February, Titi Montmartre was subsequently sold privately and moved from Chris Barber’s stable to that of Philip Hobbs and Johnson White.
