We are delighted to report that the point to point season has restarted with hardly a hitch, including the return of owners to the amber zone this last weekend.
Horse numbers remain good with the highest numbers of entries and runners at this last weekend averaging 69 per meeting. Its certainly competitive with some quality maidens boding well for the future.
Some Local Authorities remain twitchy, meaning that we must continue to maintain the protocols to demonstrate that we are safe. However, we are confident that our current programme will be able to be rolled out with the return of paying public at most courses from Monday, May 17 onwards. We are looking to see if we can get clearance to run a couple of pilot meetings before that date with small numbers of paying public, and we will try to make that known on this site first to give you an opportunity to get tickets. So please keep looking.
In meantime, we are sorry to have to confirm a few cancellations:
– In the north, our Scottish points finally had to give up trying to stage a meeting as the risk had become huge with no confidence that the obstacles could be overcome. Zetland with Cleveland at Witton Castle has kindly come forward a week to Sunday, May 2 to ensure a two-week gap between the Holderness fixture and itself and then a further two weeks to the Haydon at Hexham, which concludes the point-to-point season in the north with some hunter chases to follow.
– In Wales, Bonvilston (two fixtures) and the Pembrokeshire have also had to cancel. This is desperately sad for Wales which has not been able to run a fixture since the Carmarthenshire in 2019. Fingers crossed for next year.
– Torrington at Umberleigh, our normal end of season meeting, has also been forced to call off. However, Kingston Blount has volunteered to host a meeting in its place to be run on Saturday, June 12.
This leaves us with no weekend holding more than four fixtures until the end of the season, and no raceday with more than two. As it is there are now 25 fixtures remaining spread over eight weekends and 17 racedays. Add to that some truly excellent watering underway this year, and we should continue to see some great quality racing, which is seriously competitive.
