Joe Williamson, an emerging talent on the Yorkshire point-to-point scene last season, bids to score on Jaxlight for trainer Justin Landy at Uttoxeter today (4.55).

Now a 7lb claiming conditional jockey based with trainer Gillian Boanas, Williamson (pictured above) won on Jaxlight at Southwell last week when the mare became Landy’s first success as a permit holder.

Today’s task is not made any easier by a 7lb penalty, and Landy, who trains Jaxlight for his sister, Camilla Southerington, believes today’s 13-runner handicap hurdle is a tougher assignment.

He said: “We won a very bad race last week, but with Joe’s claim she only carries 10st 5lb today. I just fear a few others will lay up with her today and catch her out at the end, but I’m hopeful that she could be placed.

“Whatever she does from here is a bonus, because she’s got a win on the board. It was nice to get that so soon after getting my permit.”

Landy will not be lost to the point-to-point scene, and says he hopes to train four or five horses for that job next season, although he admitted: “I’m getting a bit spoilt with this Rules racing. It will seem a bit odd saddling up in a field, and I like having the option of running horses over a variety of distances, but pointing has been good to us and does a job.”
