The new Wessex point to point season opens at Badbury Rings near Wimborne, DT11 9JL when the Portman hold their annual meeting on Sunday with the first race scheduled at 12.30pm. The first of 21 meetings due to be held across Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire from November to May 2026 will provide racegoers with plenty of excellent racing and a chance to see future equine stars as well as both experienced and novice amateur jockeys. Always an excellent day out for the family and in addition to the six horse races there will be dog racing in the paddock , a silent auction and a grand raffle and trade stands to browse and the bookmakers to have a bet with. The main sponsors of the meeting are Savills and Spire Jaguar Land Rover. The current report is good and with rain forecasted for the week the going should be just about perfect for Sunday. Entry costs are £15 per person with under 16s free when accompanied by an adult.
There are eleven entries for the opening Maiden race for four- and five-year-olds over the shorter trip of two miles and four furlongs. Leading trainers of Christopher Barber, Harry Ryall, Will Biddick and Luca Morgan are all represented and one of these may produce the winner. Chris has entered the ex-Irish Samba Mambo who has run twice before whereas Harry has two entries namely the unraced Espiritu Park and the ex Irish Georges Street and his choice should be respected. Will has the unraced Winding Lake who is related to Bobs Worth the winner of the Gold Cup in 2013 whereas Luca who has already trained a winner this season has the ex-Irish J’Envoievalserenki. Riskamatriark trained by Mike Vanstone was a good second at Holnicote last season and must have each way chances. A chance is taken with Kow Boy Sivola previously with Sandy Thomson who boasts placed Hurdles form and is now in the capable hands of Ed Rees.
Fred Phillipson Stow appears to hold the aces in the Novice Riders race with his name appearing against the two leading fancies. Already the winner of nine races he returns to Novice Rider races following the change in the rules to widen the availability to win 10 races as a Novice. He has recorded most of these victories on his father Edward’s A Jet of Our Own and is very consistent and should relish Badbury Rings. His other option is the exciting mare Regatta de Blanc who is unbeaten in point to points including the 2024 Coronation Gold Cup and two Hunter Chases. After an unsuccessful spell with Paul Nicholls she has returned to Will Biddick and will surely give the Pendil Partnership another enjoyable season. Their main opposition is Somptueux who is likely to be ridden by Marina Bealby who won this race 12 months ago and ran well at Stratford at the end of last season. Fred is likely to be on the winner.
Rocky Creed trained by Bea Coward near Mere, Wiltshire looks the likely winner of the Conditions race as he boasts good form from last season and looked unlucky when slipping up at Cothelstone on his final outing. Ballinoulart is still a Maiden whereas Finisher has been placed but has not won for some considerable time. Doyannie is returning to racing after a spell at stud and this winning chaser may prove the main rival to Rocky Creed.
The feature race, the Mixed Open, also holds an entry for Regatta de Blanc where if this race is chosen, she is likely to be partnered by her trainer Will Biddick. She would be the one to beat. Harry Ryall has entered both Another Furlough (pictured above, credit to Tim Holt) and Norton Hill. The first named is a prolific winner at the Dorset course and would be the choice if the mare is absent. Poli Roi won four points for Tim Vaughan but missed last season so should be watched on his debut for a new stable. Southfield Lily has won both her races at the course last season for her usual rider Lily Bradstock but her reluctance to race in her final two races does send warning bells.
Go Sacre Go would be a very popular winner for her local trainer Sally Alner in the Restricted race. Very lightly raced but clearly talented by his run at Wincanton in a Hunter Chase behind Mr Glass he ought to be too good for his rivals one of which may be Rocky Creed mentioned in the Conditions race. Assassins Lullaby who won at this meeting last year beating My Lucky Star who may reoppose is worthy of consideration for his usual pilot Jack Stenhouse. Shuile Warrior won at Chaddesley Corbett and is on the upgrade.
The meeting concludes with a Maiden for which nine entries have been received. Harry Ryall has entered Georges Street and River Don and the former placed in an Irish point may hold his best chance of winning this race. Chris Barber also has two Samba Mambo entered in the opening race and Fukkatsu Enki who already has been placed in an Irish point in October. His fitness could be an important factor in this race. Alan Hill has entered Papa Barns who was placed for Olly Murphy is another who should be fit having last run in September. Riskamatriark is a tentative selection if this race is chosen for him.
