The Northern Area Point-to-Point season gets underway at Hexham Racecourse on Saturday 29th November with the Border fixture, which has 56 entries on a six-race card starting at 12.30pm.

The opening 3m Northern Area Conditions Race is a competitive-looking affair with 8 of the 12 entries rated 92 and above. Monfin Girl made a winning debut in an 11-runner 3m Inchydoney Mares Maiden in May and that form was given a boost when the third that day Miss Chipley got off the mark at Loughrea seven weeks ago. Having subsequently joined Joe O’Shea’s yard, the six-year-old is sure to be fully tuned up for her reappearance.

Of the others, 105-rated winning chaser Harjo is a welcome addition to Will Ramsay’s ‘Jockey Start’ team and will be ridden by Abi Embleton, Amma Lord acts well on soft ground and has won first time out in two of the last three seasons at Hutton Rudby and Friars Haugh, Not The Chablis won Conditions Races at the Jedforest and College Valley fixtures last term and is another one who likes plenty of cut, both of She Is The Enemy’s wins last season came on a sounder surface, while the Lucinda Russell-trained gelding Whatdeawant should also be in the mix if reproducing the form shown when beating Amma Lord at Friars Haugh in March.

The 12 entries for the 3m Maiden Race are headed by 103-rated hurdler Mister Frostie. Joe Wright’s new recruit is back in calmer waters here after shaping with promise in Maiden Hurdles at the likes of Fairyhouse, Navan and Punchestown last season from Colin McBratney’s yard. The main danger could be Jimmy Walton’s lightly raced mare High On The Hill who finished runner-up on her only two starts last term at Hexham and Tranwell behind Carlenrig and Lets Go Harry respectively. Of the others, Claramount showed promise when third in a Tallow Maiden in February, while the well related Phantoms Cave was placed twice in this grade at Friars Haugh in his debut campaign and should soon be losing his maiden tag.

The 3m Mixed Open Race has 8 entries and could see a mouth-watering clash between class acts Givega and Gracchus De Balme.

130-rated chaser Givega has won 6 of 9 career starts under all codes and is unbeaten since joining Luca Morgan’s Warwickshire yard last year. After being off the track for thirteen months, he was a comfortable all the way winner of a 16-runner Larkhill Conditions Race on yard debut last December before following up impressively in a 2m6f Leicester Hunters’ Chase in February on soft ground.

134-rated chaser Gracchus De Balme landed last season’s 2m5f Aintree Foxhunters’ Chase under Huw Edwards and the nine-year-old proved he has no stamina issues when making all in the 3m3f Stratford Champion Hunters’ Chase on May 30.

Entries trained more locally include the evergreen Chameron and Western Run who recorded five victories between them last season but may have to settle for minor honours here.

The 2m4f Ladies Open Race has 6 entries and the one to beat is 128-rated chaser St Cuthbert’s Cave. Previously with Rose Dobbin and Gordon Elliott, the seven-year-old won a Uttoxeter Handicap Chase on his first start for the Simon Edwards yard on September 16 before following up between the flags in a Lower Machen Men’s Open on November 9 after being switched to Joe O’Shea’s Cheshire yard. The main dangers are former 148-rated chaser Killer Clown who won three of his last four Pointing starts last season under Daisy White, and Bekah Duffy’s mount Lunar Contact who finished runner-up to the useful Cullin Hills in a 3m Hexham Hunters’ Chase in April.

2024 winner Rewritetherules heads the 7 entries for the 2m4f Conditions Race and is likely to be sent off a short-priced favourite as he bids to score first time out for the second season in a row. Of the others, former George Bewley-trained chaser Follow Your Arrow is now with owner/trainer/rider Phil Greaves and should appreciate the drop in class, 101-rated chaser Jump The Shark landed a 2m7f Downpatrick Handicap Chase in May 2024 when trained by Gavin Cromwell, while the shorter trip will suit Park Hind who got off the mark at Overton in April.

The concluding 2m4f Maiden Race has 11 entries and may chiefly concern unraced 4-year-olds Jack Wooley, Via Romano and Amber Dancer. Malton based rider/trainer Jack Teal knows the time of day when it comes to getting one ready first time out and his latest debutant Jack Wooley is a half-brother to 136-rated hurdler Bill Joyce who was a dual bumper winner as well as being a 4-year-old winner between the flags. James King’s mount Via Romano is highly regarded by connections and won’t be making the long journey from Luca Morgan’s in-form Warwickshire yard (2 wins and a second from 3 runners this season) just for a change of scenery, while Amber Dancer’s dam Langley House was a winner over hurdles as well as being placed three times and was also placed three times in bumpers.

Admission is £15 per person including a racecard, with under 16’s free (Cash only). Hexham Racecourse is well signposted from the A69 and the post code is NE46 2JP.
