Little more than three weeks after winning a maiden point-to-point on the opening day of the season at Lower Machen, Western Monkey scored in grand style at Haydock yesterday.

It was a superb double for owner/breeder Michelle Machin-Jefferies, and a grand bit of teamwork between point-to-point trainer Chris Barber and licensed trainer Harry Derham. Barber trained the six-year-old to make a winning debut at the Welsh course under Ed Doggrell, then Derham was in charge when Western Monkey won yesterday’s maiden hurdle by four and a half lengths under Paul O’Brien.

Taking up the story of the transition, Herefordshire-based Barber said: “We break in Harry’s young horses and were down at his yard in the summer. Western Monkey had just arrived there from his owners and was looking pretty backward, so we had a chat and decided that going down the point-to-point route might be a good option for him. He’s six, so couldn’t run in a bumper, and we felt a point-to-point would be better than a novices’ hurdle.

“He came here and the more he did the more we liked him. He just ate, galloped and did it all himself. He’s a proper British-bred horse, the type of National Hunt horse we should be trying to breed.

“I wasn’t entirely surprised that he won at Machen and he did it well again yesterday.”

Important test at Sandown

Former British point-to-pointers are consistently winning races under rules, and there is another important test at Sandown tomorrow, when No Drama This End and Tormund Giantsbane line up in a Gr.2 novices’ hurdle (1.45).

They both made winning debuts in British points as four-year-olds – No Drama This End at Badbury Rings for Will Biddick, and Tormund Giantsbane for Nick Pearce at Kimble – and have since scored under rules for trainers Paul Nicholls and Dan Skelton. They dominate the head of the market in tomorrow’s five-runner race.
