The latest chapter of The Racing Family Johnson unfolds at Chaddesley Corbett’s annual Festive meeting on Sunday 28th December when teenager Willow Johnson, daughter of former champion jockey Richard, has her first ride in public aboard Jimmy The Digger in the Ladies Open.

Fledgling rider Johnson,17, is currently still at school studying for her A-Levels, and her father commented:” Willow is mad keen on giving it a go and hopefully the horse, who we got from Henry Daly’s yard, will give her a nice spin round on her first try on a racecourse

“She has got more brains than I ever had and looking further ahead obviously her education has got to come before riding but this was a nice opportunity over the holiday period for her to make her debut. It will be a nervous Mum (Fiona) and Dad watching the race and how things pan out.”

Four-times Rules champion jumps jockey Johnson cut his teeth between the flags many moons ago before turning professional and concluded: “There is no better learning experience than point to pointing for young riders as it gives them a really good footing in the sport – I have to say it proved invaluable to me.”

With the likes of Aintree Foxhunters’ winner Gracchus De Balme, I’m Supposin and Midnight River entered in the contest it looks a hot heat but if the first-named turns up on the day he should take all the beating for Joe O’Shea and owner Derek Malam.

O’Shea could also have a big say in the outcome of the Men’s Open with recent Hexham winner Paul Marvel, who will relish the underfoot conditions and looks the type his connections will do well with in hunter chases come the New Year

However he will not have matters all his own way as Important Notice and Shanagh Bob are also among the entries. The former boasts winning form at the circuit last season and will have the testing conditions he very much favours while Shanagh Bob is the type who will come on for his run at the previous meeting.

The meeting kicks off at 11.00 with a Maiden (for 4 and 5yos) and this race may well divide with 24 entries – as always these types of races are all about looks in the preliminaries and movements in the betting ring especially with the bigger yards. Docket Man, runner up at Lower Machen and now with Tom Malone, looks the form pick .

But likely dangers abound with Grey Area boasting experience in Ireland and his trainer Bradley Gibbs struck with a similar type (Briskalo) at the course earlier this month. Another coming into the reckoning is Will Biddick’s debutant Strictlycommercial as the yard definitely knows the time of day when it comes to these types of races.

The PPORA Intermediate could see the return to racecourse duty of the progressive Ideal Du Tabert, who caught the eye when runner up on his British debut here last season before going on to win his next couple of starts. He is one to keep on the right side this term for the Huw Edwards/Laura Richardson team.

Likely favourite if turning up is Josh Newman’s Noble Blue as he has built up a strong following in the West Country – winning five of his six starts, while Couer D’Alene, trained by Chris Barber, comes into the reckoning on the back of his victory at the circuit three weeks ago.

The PPORA Conditions contest for Novice Riders is something of a lottery with plenty in with a shout of winning but the two against the field could well prove to be Bass Rock, the mount of Lucas Murphy (son of former rider Timmy) and Ping Pong Paddy, who has winning form around the Worcestershire circuit.

A Maiden (for 6yo and older) is the ‘getting out stakes’ which completes the card and it might not take that much winning so Kings Cowboy definitely comes into the equation as does Incitatus, And with that the West Mercian area wishes everyone a prosperous New Year.
