A break in the weather means jump racing returns this afternoon when the season’s first hunters’ chase is set to take place.

Heavy rain is forecast to hit Taunton, but assuming the ‘good’ ground copes a field of nine runners is set to line up for the Geoffrey Bosley ‘Tally Ho’ Open Hunters’ Chase (3.30). Likely favourite Unexpected Party, who is trained by Dan Skelton and will be ridden by Heidi Palin, is a classy handicapper who has held a steady rating in the 140s, and while he has not won a race for 22 months that victory came at the Cheltenham Festival in the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase.

His rivals today will be hoping the 2m5f trip will test his stamina for he has tended to race at distances around two miles, but his class may carry him through.

Key rivals include the Nicky Sheppard-trained A Jet Of Our Own (pictured top of page), who has become a dream for owner Ed Philipson-Stow. He acquired the horse as a maiden to give son Fred more experience in his second season, but he gone on to become a talented performer. He provided Fred with his first six victories, including a win in the two-miler at Cheltenham’s evening hunters’ chase meeting, and more recently he beat the useful Duc De Bourbon in an open race at Larkhill.

Philipson-Stow would have been sure of a spin in the race had he not been riding his father’s horse, for he and tDorset Dazzler have formed a fine partnership this season with two victories at Larkhill. Sam Lee takes over today, while Henry Crow rides stablemate Dorset Diamond – Bartlett bred and owns both horses, the pair being full brothers. Bartlett’s daughter, Lilian, runs Finisher under James Shaw.

Another to note is Stumps Or Slips, who is returning to the amateur sport with Devon trainer Ed Walker having made his debut in a point-to-point while trained in Worcestershire by Tom Weston. After switching to racing under rules for Weston he won a handicap chase, and more recently he clocked up four straight wins for Olly Murphy, taking his handicap mark from 95 to 120. Current owner Reg Hopkins bought the nine-year-old for £26,000 at Goffs UK’s Doncaster Sale in October – Zac Baker takes the ride today.
