When Conditions races were first introduced, fears were expressed in some quarters that they would adversely affect the quality of Open races on a card. The racing at Brocklesby showed however that both a Level 1 Conditions and a Mixed Open can happily live alongside each other with both providing high class fayre. Rebel Dawn Rising (122) has been racing near the top for a couple of seasons and despite now being twelve years old shows no real sign of deterioration. He was easy to back at a shade of odds on with the market clearly expecting greater things from of the once top class, but recently out of form, What a Glance (122) and the duo fought out a sustained battle up the home straight. At the business end there was just a neck between them, although Rebel Dawn Rising appeared to have a little bit more in hand . Another Hunter chase victory beckons. The Mixed Open immediately followed – again run at a decent clip- with Midnight River (114) taking his tally to two wins from just three outings when taking the scalp of the hitherto unbeaten Designed To Win (114). Both should go onto further success – and supporters of Designed to Win should take heart from the fact that he faced a stiff task here in attempting to concede the winner three pounds.
The Brockelsby card concluded with a comfortable Maiden win for Drayton Flyer (94). He brought a decent level of form from under Rules and won in the manner of a horse who could well run up a sequence – providing his jumping improves with experience.
Up at Alnwick conditions were testing but this did not hinder High On The Hill (101) who took the Restricted in good style who took the Restricted in good style. Always consistent, the mare is an improved performer this season and should find another small race.
Fastest performance on the College Valley card came from Largy Shark (118) who found the two and a half mile trip of the Conditions Level 3 very much to his liking. His time figure is some 9 lbs in advance of his form rating – bordering on Open class at this distance.
A nine race extravaganza took place at Badbury Rings with several promising maidens making their debuts. Fastest of the three divisions of the NWFAA maidens was the first, won in tremendous style by the scopey Amroth Boy (94), a half- brother to three decent jumps performers. Sent of the 5/4 favourite, good things were clearly expected and he duly delivered, hardly being off the bridle to hand out a twenty length beating to the remaining finishers. The second division went to Dollanstown (96), less hyped, but who recorded a figure 7lbs ahead of his form rating. He can offer some value when re-appearing.
On a day of high class racing, the most impressive performance came from the very progressive Couer D’Alene (116). He would have been unbeaten this season but for veering out when well clear at Chaddesley, has beaten several who have gone on to frank the form, and looks one of the most impressive second season pointers of the year.
In time Coeur D’Alene might find Byorderofthecourt (108) a worthy rival, Dale Peters charge following up a winning return with a resolute defeat of Hugo Moss (102) in the Duncombe Park Restricted. He remains one to follow, as is the runner-up who fully deserves a victory after some honest recent efforts.
