The Welsh season gets back underway this weekend after a long and extremely wet winter. The weather has seen a number of fixtures being abandoned particularly those towards the west of the country; this has left trainers with horses needing to race and over eighty of those horses have put their names forward to take part in this weekend’s event.
The Howick track is one of the longstanding perennials of Welsh pointing and with its proximity to the M4 and only a short drive from either of the Severn bridges it attracts both racegoers and public from either side of the border. With its tight left-handed turns and sweeping downhill finish it always provided exciting racing and demands skill and natural ability form both horse and rider. This weekends fixture has a seven-race card with the action scheduled to start at 12 p.m. when the runners for the Hunt Members division head to the start. This contest will see the seasonal reappearance of Ichidaly Robin, the prolific Robin De Pres gelding trained by Luke Price who has won all eight of his starts between the flags and will be partnered by James King. He is not as highly rated however as the other Price entry Lavorante, but it is unlikely that the pair will take each other on. Joanne Priest has an excellent record at the Howick track and has three entries the most notable being Western Cowboy who will however be hampered by a ten-pound penalty.
The Restricted contest looks to be an evenly matched affair with the Price inmate Mr Bezi holding the aces when it comes to the ratings. Karaktere d’Enfer likes to race prominently and the track may suit the six-year-old who is another from the Joanne Priest stable. Last seen at Chaddesley Corbett in December this is his first season between the flags. Joanne also fields another recent winner in the form of Is Our Otis who was a victor at Bitterly.
Bradley Gibbs will be making the journey along the M4 to come home to Wales for the meeting and with him he will bring Roy Swinbourne’s Premier Fantasy who has been in the paddock on both of his outings this season, his last being at Revesby Park in January. Of the total fifteen entries he is the highest rated and with over half of the fifteen entries with ratings in the one hundreds it looks to be a competitive division.
The card holds two contests for Maiden horses the first division reaching the starter at 13.45. There are twelve entries with only seven having performed under the judge often enough to earn a rating. Highest rated of these is the Luke Price charge Lightening Legs an ex Irish hurdler who may find the step back to point pointing to his liking. Although still only a five-year-old the son of Gustav Klimt has experience on his side. If recent form is to be the guide, then Walkingtheline is the one to follow having been headed on the run in at Larkhill a couple of weeks ago.
Nine horses could line up for the Mixed Open with the eight-year-old grey son of Mount Nelson, Mount Sinai topping the ratings. However, since his victory in the Dunsmore Mixed Open in November he has yet to complete, pulling up on his latest outing. The most popular winer would be On Springs for young Dewi Haddock, having his first season in point to points having risen through the ranks of Welsh Pony Racing which has helped produce so many of today’s top jockeys. Recent form points to the ex-Christian Williams charge Uno Mass now in the hands of Byron Moorcroft.
The second of the Maiden contests has a health eighteen entries with Wait at the Gate for David Phelan holding the highest rating while both Master Force and One-man Party finished second in their last outings. A few of the entries have made the step down from the National Hunt field and these are often worth watching as jumping is a key factor in races at Howick. One such is Try The Money last seen in a Market Rase Steeplechase.
The meeting closes with the Intermediate where the Alan Hill entry The Dancing Tree shares top rating with Bradley Gibbs charge Practice Run. The Dancing Tree has won his last two starts including at Kingston Blount in February and this looks to be a competitive contest to close out the day.
Racing starts at 12. p.m. and the course can be found two miles out of Chepstow on the B4293 (exit 2 M48) NP 16 6BL.
