A stellar weekend for the Neil Gittens yard was spearheaded by Great Valley (118). I have been following Great Valley’s career with interest since he posted an above average figure in a Restricted last February. Unbeaten since, he has been the subject of some eye-catching country-wide entries in recent weeks but at Bangor-on-Dee he was playing near to home and did not disappoint, always going well and cantering home from some race fit rivals to set a career- best figure. A Novice Hunter Chase has been mentioned as a possible future target but the Lady Dudley Cup appears a more realistic first step. Only a six-year-old, he has time on his side to tackle races over bigger obstacles that offer less prestige.
Reel Much Fun (108) looked very much a stayer when taking the step up to Restricted level at High Easter. It’s relatively unusual for a horse to clock two fast time figures in successive events but Reel Much Fun achieved this with aplomb and although he needed to kept up to his work in the home straight it was noticeable how quickly he stretched out a field that had been closely bunched at the foot of the hill. The Hill yard has introduced some useful youngsters this season (Drayton Flyer was also an easy winner at Bangor) and this taking individual should continue to progress.
What’s Up Harry (108) caused something of a shock when taking the Restricted at Didmarton, just holding off the well backed Ask Elli in a driving finish, but his subsequent time figure suggests this was no fluke. Benefitting from a trademark forceful ride from Amber Jackson Fennell he rallied well having been headed at the last and such gameness deserves to be rewarded with further success.
