The North Staffordshire meeting takes place on Easter Saturday at the picturesque Sandon estate (postcode ST18 0DL). The going was soft at the start of the week, but with some dry weather forecast before the meeting the ground should ride well. There have been fifty-five entries for the six races starting at 1.00.

The opening Members has attracted three entries. The seven-year-old Mayor Kingston is from the in-form Neil Gittins yard. He has taken his time to win a Maiden at Bangor last month and should be competitive against his two rivals who are each five years older. Rewritetherules won at Hexham at the end of 2024, but has not been in the same form since. The Garton Family’s Poncherello won a closely fought Conditions (Level 2) race at Dalton Park a fortnight ago, and may be good enough here.

There are thirteen entries for the PPOPRA Club Members Conditions (Level 2). On paper it’s a hot contest if all of them turn up, but with multiple meetings around the country over the weekend it’s hard to know which ones will declare. The leading contenders are Boley Bob, Call Me Early, Couer d’Alene, Midnight River and What a Glance. What a Glance was a high-class horse a couple of seasons back and ran well at the Brocklesby losing out to Rebel Dawn Rising in a close finish. He then found the Cheltenham Foxhunters too much and pulled up. Midnight River fell early last time out but won two races previously this season. There are three six-year-olds who have fast-improving profiles. The Joe O’Shea trained Boley Bob has won a Restricted, Intermediate and Conditions Race. Call Me Early has won a Restricted and an Intermediate. However, Couer d’Alene may prove the best of them having looked impressive in winning two Restricted and an Intermediate.

In the Maiden over two miles and five furlongs, Leopard d’Irlande, Noble Thistle, Pip Pirrip and Widkatze make most appeal of those that have raced. However, respect would need to be given to the two unraced four-year-olds Rebel Aura and Six Seven from good stables. Widkatze has a couple of placed efforts but seems to fade in the closing stages. Leopard d’Irlande is gradually improving in his runs. Pip Pirrip has been runner-up in his last two runs at Bangor and Howick. The Chris Barber trained four-year-old Noble Thistle looked very promising when runner-up on his debut run in a Maiden at Charlton Horethorne, and may go one better here.

There are twelve entries for the Mixed Open and the ones who make most appeal are Cheytac, Fumet D’Oudairies, Midnight River, Ocean Drifter and Paul Marvel. Gina Andrews has the choice between Cheytac and Fumet D’Oudairies. They both have won two Conditions Races and will be competitive. Andrews’ sister Bridget Skelton would have an excellent chance if Midnight River runs here instead of the earlier Conditions Race. Paul Marvel won two Leicester Hunter Chases but pulled up in the Foxhunters. Ocean Drifter won a competitive Mixed Open at Chaddesley Corbett in December and is selected to win here.

The Conditions Race (Level 2) over two miles and five furlongs has ten entries. Arctic Oscar, Couer D’Alene, Loud and Proud, Midnight River and Skandiburg have the best form. In the absence of Couer D’Alene and Midnight River who were covered in the earlier races, preference would be given to Arctic Oscar.

The concluding race is on the flat over two miles for four- and five-year-olds. None of the seven entries has seen a racecourse yet, so it’s impossible to predict a winner. However, it will be informative to look at them in the parade ring and watch the betting market for clues.
