There were some excellent races at Eyton on Easter Monday, with thirty-five runners contesting the six races. Eight went to post for the featured Goffs GP Pointing Bonus Race for four- and five-year-olds Maiden, and it produced a very exciting finish. Sean O’Connor on Magnifaik and Ed Doggrell on Milo of Croton had a ding-dong battle over the last two fences with Magnifaik prevailing by half-a-length, and Zak Baker on Cricket Legend running on strongly a further three-quarters-of-a length away in third.

Winning trainer Max Kendrick was represented at the track by his wife Charlotte, as he was travelling back from Fairyhouse with the Fergal O’Brien charge Sixmilesbridge, who had run there on Sunday. Eyton is a lucky course for him, as he rode two winners from two rides the only time he had visited the course. He had an order to buy two young horses at the Derby Tattersall Sales last year when he was on holidays, and Jerry McGrath highly recommended the filly Magnifaik, which he bought for 26,000 euros. The four-year-old now heads to the Goffs sale after racing at Aintree on Thursday.

The six-year-old and upwards Maiden was sponsored by the late Gordy Edwards’ family and there was a very emotional twist to the result. Huw Edwards made most of the running on his father Simon’s Artic Sting and ran out a convincing seven-lengths winner from Thirty Bob ridden by John Dawson. The winner was owned by Gordy’s nephew and ridden by his great nephew so the stars were definitely aligned on this occasion. The horse ran in the colours of Gordy’s late brother Roy Edwards, who was a renowned professional jockey and breeder. The six-year-old mare had been bought privately three years ago.

The Mixed Open produced another tight finish, where Harry O’Dwyer on Premier Fantasy held on by half-a-length from Ed Doggrell on Hugos New Horse. They jumped the last upsides where Hugos New Horse made a bad mistake and lost momentum, but rallied again close home. The winner is trained by Bradley Gibbs and his last win had been in a Conditions Race at the corresponding meeting last year.

Ivor Herbert on Yippee Ki Yay made all in the Novice Riders Race and won easily from Amenon by eight lengths. The winner is trained by West Mercian Area Secretary Nicky Sheppard.

Henry Crow won on his sole ride Count Frollo who kept on well to beat Briskalo by two-and-a-half lengths in the Restricted. The winner is trained by Rhiannon Lodge and is owned by Colin Gittins. The six-year-old gelding likes the course as he had come home first here in a young horse Maiden last year, which was declared void on the day.

Iola Sankey on Blagthebookies bided her time and took it up at the third last, before winning by eight lengths from O’Hallorans Castle in the Members Race. The winner was following up from his win at Bangor last month and continued trainer Neil Gittins great form with his third winner of the week from his small string of four horses.
