Tom Bellamy, one of numerous jockeys who have progressed from Britain’s point-to-point ranks to become professional jockeys, has picked up a notable spare ride in Saturday’s £1m Randox Grand National.

Bellamy, 31, has been booked by champion trainer Willie Mullins to partner year’s winner Nick Rockett, a terrific endorsement of the jockey’s standing among his peers. He has been jocked up following news that Mullins’s son Patrick, who won on Nick Rockett last year, will ride the horse who finished third 12 months’ ago, Grangeclare West.

Bellamy, whose father Robert was an amateur and later professional jockey and now a familiar voice as a race-day announcer at point-to-point fixtures predominantly in the West Mercian region, rode in the sport for two seasons in 2010/11 and 2011/12. After making his debut on family horse Basis Point at Chaddesley Corbett in January 2011 he went on to partner five winners from 28 rides, picking up his first point-to-point victory on the same horse at Didmarton a couple of months’ later. By that time he had already ridden a winner under rules on Ponchatrain at Ffos Las, and he has subsequently become a leading figure in the weighing room and the regular choice as jockey for trainers such as Alan King, Emma Lavelle and Kim Bailey and Mat Nicholls.

He is currently enjoying his best season with 64 winners and counting, and at last month’s Cheltenham Festival he partnered the Bailey/Nicholls-trained White Noise to victory in the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.

Among other riders heading to Aintree for Grand National mounts having made a mark as novice riders in point-to-points are current champion jockey Sean Bowen (Haiti Couleurs), James Bowen (High Class Hero), Jonjo O’Neill Jr (Iroko), Jack Tudor (Mr Vango), Sam Twiston-Davies (Beauport), Harry Cobden (Perceval Legallois), Ben Jones (Jordans), Harry Skelton (Panic Attack), Toby McCain-Mitchell (Top Of The Bill) and Beau Morgan (Twig). Callum Pritchard will also be in the line-up if a couple of runners drop out and his mount, Imperial Saint, moves up from the list of reserves.
