The penultimate Scottish action of the Northern Area Point-to-Point season takes place on Sunday 12th April at Overton Farm, Crossford with all proceeds from the Overton Races Family Day fixture going to St Andrew’s Hospice.
The opening 3m Northern Area Conditions Race at 1.00pm can go to Townhill who is unpenalised for last month’s Friars Haugh success over Not The Chablis, and had excuses when beaten two lengths by Deerstalker over course and distance last time out. Of the other 9 entries, course winner Batman For Ever is down in grade after finishing nine lengths 3rd to Eagles Rock in the Overton Mixed Open on March 21, the aforementioned dual course winner Deerstalker and this season’s College Valley scorer Harjo are double-entered on the card and would have to carry 10lb penalties if taking up this option, Everyday Champagne lost a shoe when finishing eleven lengths 3rd here last month, while Charlotte Stork has her first ride on winning chaser So They Say.
The 3m Restricted Race (8 entries) may chiefly concern Hurricane Harmony, Master Bricklayer and My Caraline. After a couple of near-misses at Friars Haugh, Hurricane Harmony deservedly got his head in front here three weeks ago when beating Bentley Road by half-a-length and the step in trip shouldn’t inconvenience Nick Orpwood’s mount who is taken to follow up. 92-rated hurdler Master Bricklayer shaped well on his first start for ten months when five lengths 3rd to Helm Bar over course and distance on March 21, and Jesika Rennie’s mount should come on for that run, while My Caraline made a winning debut in a competitive 2m4f Tranwell Maiden for the in-form Jack Teal yard and has scope for further improvement.
The trio likely to be in contention at the business end of proceedings in the 2m4f Conditions Race for Novice Riders (7 entries) are For One Night Only, Itwasfate and Jump The Shark. The latter finished eleven lengths 3rd over this trip at Bangor-on-Dee on March 8 behind much higher rated rivals and a reproduction of that form should see him go close here. For One Night Only’s best run in a busy season came here last month when two lengths 2nd to Theoldboggroad, while the shorter trip will suit ex-Irish hurdler and chaser Itwasfate who gave first season rider Fergal Holohan a great spin when fifteen lengths 2nd to Phantoms Cave at Overton three weeks ago.
Deerstalker and Harjo would have 17lb less to carry in the 3m MIxed Open Race (8 entries) than if taking up their other option in the opening contest. The one to beat is Eagles Rock who boasts form figures of 111 at Overton. He finished full of running when beating Whats The Solution by five lengths on his most recent visit and can brush aside a 3lb penalty for that win. Locally trained Western Run still held every chance when unseating four out in last month’s Overton Mixed Open for Novice Riders and this four-time course winner is sure to be in the mix with a clear round, while recent Tranwell Ladies Open winner Watch Law showed his liking for Overton when landing Level 2 Conditions Races in March 2023 and April 2025.
The 3m Conditions Race (9 entries) should be a penalty kick for Phantoms Cave against some out of form rivals. After getting off the mark in the 2m4f Berwickshire Maiden, he was in command when falling four out in the Buccleuch Restricted before making most of the running when beating Itwasfate by fifteen lengths here three weeks ago in a fast time. The aforementioned For One Night Only would have place claims in this company, while course winner First One D’Ana will appreciate the drop in class after being well beaten in Mixed Open contests on 5 of his last 6 starts.
The concluding 2m4f Maiden Race (12 entries) can go to Libero in the well known colours of Ronnie Bartlett. The 5-year-old is a half-brother to Hurkhan who won ten times over jumps in France and was also placed ten times. Nick Orpwood’s mount heads to Overton with the benefit of Irish Pointing starts this term at Kirkistown and Tyrella in his locker, and it’s worth noting that the Kirkistown winner Locker Boum changed hands for £100,000 at Goffs UK Coral Cold Cup Sale a week later.
Jack Teal can choose between G N Jefferson, Good Moon Rising and Run Around Susie. The former was prominent for a long way on debut in a 3m Didmarton Maiden on March 7 before finishing twenty three lengths 4th, Good Moon Rising was still three lengths ahead when falling four out in a 2m6f Dalton Park Maiden three weeks ago, while Run Around Susie showed promise when 4th on debut in a Carlisle Bumper in mid-November won by Capricciose. Tranwell runner-up Follow The Leader is also entered in the 3m Bedale Maiden on Saturday, while the shorter trip will suit Claramount who has been knocking at the door all season.
As usual, the main action is preceded at 12.00pm by pony racing with a total of 13 entries for the 2 contests.
Admission is £15 per person including a racecard, with under 16’s free.
The Overton Farm course lies adjacent to the A72 in Crossford and is easily accessible from the M74, leaving at J8 if travelling from the South and J7 from the North. The post code is ML8 5QF.
