Easter Monday was blessed with sunshine but the firming ground combined with a shrinking pool of available horses led to small fields and resulted in a set of unremarkable times. Fastest figure on the day was clocked by Kilfilum Woods (110) who made the majority of the running to landed his sixth pointing success in the Mixed Open at Paxford. He has been a credit to connections, running regularly throughout the past two seasons and although he has his quirks (refused to race once) largely gives his running.
Emmas Wish (97) won her second race in a week at Trebudannon, in the process paying a fine compliment to Espiritu Park who defeated her so decisively at Buckfastleigh.
Elsewhere Monday’s time figures were below or in line with horses’ performance ratings.
Barton Snow (139) duly completed the Foxhunters double, unextended, yet recording a figure slightly in advance of Cheltenham. He has clocked a number of fast times during his short career and notably fast sectionals at Askham Bryan and Stratford last season.
Dale Peters is having an excellent season both as trainer and in the saddle and introduced a couple of promising sorts the following weekend. Natureofthegame (102) was a wide margin winner of the young horse maiden at Edgecote taking the scalps of some well-regarded others from top stables. This son of Pethers Moon now heads for the sales but stablemate Spartan Brave (90) is likely to stay pointing following a gutsy success at High Easter. He was running in Irish Points as recently as mid-February and showed a fair amount of greenness on this his British debut, only sealing victory with a power packed jump at the last. He looks one to follow into next season.
The Bedale always provides for some decent racing. Tag Man (120) was the card’s highlight running out an easy winner of a Men’s Open in which his chief rival Camdonian ran disappointingly again. A mid-130’s performer for Henry Bromhead, this was Tag Man’s second win in just four starts for Charles Clark (would have been three from four but for disqualification) and he will be difficult to beat in this sort of form.
Imperial Imp (102) runs fairly infrequently but has not been out of the first two in his visits to Hornby castle and took the opening contest in good style. A return to more forcing tactics clearly suited and he may be able to land another small contest this season.
DriveonDonn (108) returned to winning form in the Intermediate – reversing form with his Holderness conqueror Fayrely Faithful – the latter well held when capsizing at the last. The key to Driveondonn’s success may well be a left handed track.
Tigerbtythetail (116) was being talked of in Cheltenham Foxhunter terms a couple of years ago until crashing fall at Fakenham halted his winning run. That fall clearly left its mark but he did manage to win a hurdle race off a mark of 115 at Catterick last February and returned to that form at Shelfield, novice ridden, when defeating the consistent Camino Rocio by a wide margin. He can follow up.
Up at Overton Itwasfate (108), another former inmate of the De Bromhead yard, spreadeagled the field when taking the Novice riders event at Overton and also looks booked for further success – his time figure being some 7lbs higher than his form assessment.
Finally, to Jet Smart. This bonny little chesnut has become something of a winning machine in the West Country, his victory at the Silverton being his tenth in sixteen starts between the flags and his most recent winning time figure of 122 a career best. But more importantly he may have a shown a way forward for others to follow as he was able to exploit a decent mark under Rules last summer before returning to points, still on an upward curve at the age of just eight. Admirably suited by a decent surface, his most recent victory under novice rider Henry Moore opens the way for new opportunities.
