On Sunday, 12th April, the Silverton hosted their meeting at Dunsmore near Exeter. 25 horses ran between the flags on good to soft ground, and the April showers did not deter a good crowd of racegoers.

Dart of Ginger went off favourite for Josh Newman in the Jockey Club Mares’ Maiden, but jumped green on her racing debut. She will be one to watch next time out. Granny Smith, Lady Wilhelmina and Winding Lake jumped the last in sync, but it was Winding Lake under Amber Jackson-Fennell who found more on the run to the line and won by 4 lengths. Trainer Will Biddick put a call out on social media in the week asking for a jockey, and it was Jackson-Fennell who had the call up on this occasion and has impressed with her first winning ride between the flags for Biddick.

Next up was a new race series for the 2025/26 season; the Jockey Club and PPA sponsored ‘Hands and Heels’ Conditions (Level 1) for Novice Riders. Riders accumulate points in the series, and the winner will be awarded a prize at the National PPA awards night at Cheltenham Racecourse. Lucy Pickford is well ahead in the leaderboard for this series and picked up points again, finishing third aboard 12-year-old Paint The Dream, whom she also owns and trains. There was a strong battle between Jet Smart and Up for Appeal for the win, but it was Jet Smart under Henry Moore who pipped Up For Appeal and Dewi Haddock to the post by 1 length. Trainer Emma Summersby has her horses in great form and has enjoyed 9 winners this season, all in the Devon & Cornwall Area.

2 runners went to post in the Steve Yeandle Contractors and Stuart Luxton Digging and Drainage Contractors sponsored Intermediate race. The race was a duel between Josh Newman and Darren Andrews in the saddle, with Andrews flying back from a big win in America on the morning of Dunsmore to take 3 rides. The pair raced upsides each other for most of the way, but Newman pushed on to take a lead going into the open ditch three from home. Woodstock Octo didn’t make it easy for Newman, as he clipped the top of the open ditch, which allowed Reflex Action to get closer on the inside. Woodstock Octo pulled away towards the line to win by 7 lengths for owners John and Sonia Gardener. This win pushed Woodstock Octo into the lead for the Connolly’s Red Mills sponsored leading horse in the PPA National Championships.

The A&S Paving and Building Supplies sponsored Mixed Open was a classy affair between Al Gasparo, On Springs and Walk of No Shame. On Springs and Haddock looked to be enjoying their run as they led the field most of the way. The pack started to push on down the back straight, and it was On Springs still in the lead from Walk of No Shame and Al Gasparo heading into four out. Approaching the open ditch Walk of No Shame joined the leader and landed in front as they headed for home. Newman held his nerve, staying at the back of the pack until asking Al Gasparo to get working and was produced brilliantly at the last, jumped into the lead and stayed on to the line to win by 2 ¾ lengths for his owners, Mr. & Mrs J.F. Symes.

Newman and Andrews found themselves in another contest between each other when 2 went to post in the PPORA and Heltor Heating and Fueling Supplies Club Members Restricted race. Both horses have been progressive for their connections this season, and the contest was tightly matched, as reflected in the betting market. Tourmaline followed closely in 2nd under Andrews, but ultimately it was Uncle Boss who had the better jumping round, which enabled him to keep hold of his lead under Newman. Owner, Mr P. J. Inch, was delighted with the win and took away a Shires cooler rug from sponsors PPORA. Winning groom, Tamzyn Bissell, was leading up for the first time and looked full of pride when giving Uncle Boss lots of fuss after his win. Since Biddick’s retirement in the saddle, Newman has been enjoying riding winners for him, and it is helping his campaign for Tattersalls Cheltenham sponsored Leading Gentleman Rider, being 6 wins behind James King after this weekend.

The final race of the day was the Devon Farriers sponsored Maiden, which saw 5 runners go to post, all of whom had run between the flags previously. In form Emma Summersby’s runner, Back to Bratton, went off favourite under Andrews. The race saw a dramatic photo finish: after the last, it looked as though Sulva Boy, under Henry Moore, was doing enough in front, but Riskamatriark made a well-timed run on the outside rail and took the win by a neck for jockey Fionn Summers and trainer Charlotte Leary. Connections were overjoyed with the result; Riskamatriark had seven starts between the flags before breaking his maiden on the eighth time of asking.

Caroline Prouse and the Silverton team had done a great job preparing the course in ever-changing weather conditions, but were rewarded with a thrilling finish in that final race.

Next in the Devon & Cornwall calendar is Flete Park on Saturday 18th April, gates open at 10.30 am.
