Yorkshire trainer Jack Teal has permed two from four entries for the GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series race at Charm Park tomorrow (Saturday, April 17).

Two days on from successfully selling Itsyourcall (pictured above) for £40,000 to agent Dan Astbury at Tattersalls Cheltenham’s April Sale Teal is set to give a debut to another young horse, four-year-old Swing By, in the Goffs-sponsored maiden race. He is also planning to run five-year-old mare Bresil Hill, who has run twice, travelling to Overton in Scotland for her debut, and then Paxford in Gloucestershire for her second start. The daughter of Blue Bresil has finished fourth each time.

Part of a series sponsored by Britain’s two live bloodstock auction houses it is the second such contest at Charm Park following one held at the Yorkshire Jockeys’ Club meeting.

Teal says of his pair: “Swing By is a hardy boy who can go a bit. I’m going to ride him for the experience and if he’s good enough I’ll put him in the race and if he wins so be it. He was a bit playful when he was younger, but he’s come on through the winter and while he’s a first foal I don’t think that makes any difference. I’d rather have a first foal [of a mare] than a last foal.

“Bresil Hill will be ridden by Scott Willis, a keen lad who works for Richard Fahey and comes in and helps me out. He’s had a few rides in point-to-points.”

Trainer Cherry Coward saddled Kingofthefrontier to win the GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series race at the previous Charm Park meeting and she has entered First Orchid, a mare by Scalo,  for tomorrow’s race. Coward’s daughter, Sam, says: “Plan A is to run her, but as you know, in racing there can be Plans B, C, D, E and F. Thomas Easterby will ride.”

Having been bred in Britain First Orchid would qualify for a £25,000 bonus should she win tomorrow and go on to success under rules from a licensed yard within two years. A horse bred overseas who wins a race in the series would be in the running for £15,000, bonus money which has been put aside by the Levy Board with the backing of the BHA as a way of highlighting young pointers who race in Britain.

Chris Barber is planning to send Rockatansky, an Irish bred son of Maxios, from his Herefordshire stable to Yorkshire where Ed Doggrell will take the ride. Barber will not be making the journey as he has business closer to home at Chaddesley Corbett, where his four runners include the James King-ridden Grace A Vous Enki, likely favourite for the Lady Dudley Cup, the last of the season’s four Classic races.

Gloucestershire trainer Luca Morgan and Cheshire-based Fred Timmis were yesterday morning scouting around for riders for Admiral Bonzo (Vadamos) and Manhatane (Bathyrhon) respectively. Timmis was pleased to say: “I’ve just got off the phone to Fred Philipson-Stow who is going to ride our filly. I bought her in Ireland [last year] at the Tattersalls Ireland July Sale [for €6,500] and couldn’t believe I got her for such a price. She’s gorgeous looking, a really strong filly and she’s done everything well at home. She jumps like a buck and she has a good page.

“We’ve done everything we can, including schooling her at Hutton Rudby and Eyton, and she does everything so well. Tomorrow’s race should give us a gauge on her ability.”
