Staged in the backdrop of the historic castle, Berkeley Races are a highlight in the late season point to pointing calendar and this year’s renewal promises six classy contests with a scheduled off-time for the first race being 2.15.

And clerk of the course Tomasia Rowe is confident that the watering regime throughout the week will have the desired effect and the going will be ‘good and good to firm in places’ come Saturday.

The feature of the afternoon is the Mixed Open and that race affords the Nicky Sheppard-trained Hugos New Horse to come good at the first time of asking for new owner/rider Daniel Cherriman

Sheppard’s charge may well have been a little unlucky on his previous outing where a mistake at the last fence cost him more than the half-a-length he was beaten and he can make amends here.

The trainer said: “We also have Yippee Ki Yay in the Berkeley race but he is being rerouted to Chepstow on Friday evening for the Dunraven Bowl so that leaves the way open for Hugos New Horse to take up the baton.”

Chris Barber has his string in particularly fine form and the Herefordshire-based handler has seemingly found a nice opportunity for Citizen Jane in the opening Members contest.

The mare has joined Barber since scoring on her final try last term and this will be her belated seasonal return but the Barber inmates are not lacking

in the fitness stakes and she should be good enough to score.

Barber has two other chances on the card with Couer D’Alene in the Conditions race and Irish import King’s Affinity in the concluding Maiden – however the latter’s form figures read more like an alphabet .

The trainer said: “Citizen Jane is very likely to take her chance in the opener as it looks very winnable on paper while I don’t know much about King’s Affinity as we have not had him that long

“As far as Couer D’Alene is concerned we will probably wait a few days and make a decision as the whether he runs later in the week. He is a nice prospect for the future and owes his owners nothing.”

If Barber’s charge misses his intended outing that could allow a winning opening for Garde La Peche, whose defeat last time may have come a shade too soon after his Larkhill victory – which was given a boost when the runner-up scored at Lockinge over the Easter weekend.

The Intermediate contest has a very open look about it with plenty of horses with chances but Francesca Poste’s Farfromaway just about gets the vote as he is flying at present.

Ed Doggrell, who gets on very well with the five-year-old, has been provisionally booked to take the ride once more and there is no reason why the pairing cannot make their presence felt again.

Kauto No Risk needs a brisk pace to aim at and the 10-year-old appears likely to get just that in the Conditions (Level 3) race. He can add to his recent Bitterley gains.
