1-2-3-4! That was the score on the doors after Ed Doggrell easily lifted the riding honours with a fabulous four-fold from the saddle following victories for Citizen Jane, Farfromaway, Couer D’Alene and King’s Affinity.
An over-the-moon Doggrell: “That is my first four-timer and I am finding it hard to take it all in. In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined this scenario and I had better make the most of it – as it may never happen again.”
The quintessential quartet put Doggrell on 28 successes for the season (clear third place in the jockey’s table) and he added: “It will be all about keeping the momentum going now and seeing where we end up.”
Making her debut for the Chris Barber team, Citizen Jane got the Doggrell bandwagon rolling in the Members contest when coasting to an all the way 20 lengths romp at the expense of Down The Inner.
Barber said: “That was a pleasing performance on her first start for the yard as she jumped well and kept up the gallop. She wants this Spring ground so we will be looking out for another race for her in the very near future.”
Francesca Poste’s Farfromaway came into the Intermediate race on the back of a ready success at Edgcote and duly repeated the dose as the Evens favourite rallied back past What’s Up Harry on the home-run for a five-lengths call.
Poste commented: “He was one of our potential Sales horses last year but didn’t quite get there as he needed a bit of time. However, I suspect he will end up at Doncaster Sales in a month or so and he could run again between now and then.”
A late decision following consultation between Barber along with owners Paul and Sara Thorman over whether Couer D’Alene should take his chance his chance in the Conditions (Level2) paid dividends as the six-year-old barely broke sweat to see off Equinus.
The trainer commented: “He had a fairly straightforward task on his hands and has won as he was entitled to do. Whether he has another outing this season will depend on ground conditions.”
Last but definitely not least in the Doggrell quartet came the ex-Irish King’s Affinity, who was sent off 2-1 joint-favourite for the Maiden and left some uninspiring form-figures well behind when easily accounting for market-rival One Man Party.
Barber reported: “His Irish form did not inspire confidence but he had been working well at home recently and I was hoping for a decent show. But that was quite impressive as he never really had to be asked a serious question.”
On any other afternoon a riding double for Daniel Cherriman may well have made a headline or two but, despite being shaded out by Doggrell’s exploits, the rider was still all smiles after victories for Galileo Silver and recent purchase Hugos New Horse.
Galileo Silver proved to be another horse relishing the slick conditions on the Woodford circuit as he made every yard of the running to collect the spoils in the Conditions (Level 3). He had a length-and-a-half in hand over Definiteadare where it mattered.
The rider said: “That is my 20th career winner and I remember them all as it has taken me plenty of time to get to that total – let’s just say they were quite well spaced out.”
Ironically, Cherriman only had to wait 35 minutes to clock victory number 21 after the Nicky Sheppard-trained Hugos New Horse proved the all-the-way winner of the Mixed Open from King’s Quay.
Sheppard remarked: “Dan only bought the horse a few days ago and what a great start to their new partnership. The horse thrives on this faster surface and I suspect there is a chance he will run again somewhere before the season ends in a month.”
