There are not many owner-trainers in the country who can match the longevity of Jack Clark and Victor Thompson, and it was great to see both of them saddling a winner at the well supported John Clark Motor Group Fife Point-to-Point at Pusk Farm on Saturday.
Always jumping and travelling well on his preferred sound surface in the 3m Bruce Farms Northern Area Conditions Race, Everyday Champagne (Joanna Walton) was in command from four out and powered home ten lengths ahead of Not The Chablis (Jesika Rennie) to give Mosshouses-based Clark a first training success since Cooking Fat obliged at Overton in April 2022.
Coincidentally, it was 56 years ago to the day that Clark rode his first winner between the flags on Dauntless Prince at nearby Balcormo Mains, while Mystical Air (Sandy Forster) was the first winner in his colours in the Tynedale Intermediate Race at Corbridge in March 1999.
More than 54 years after sending out his first winner at Cheltenham, Victor Thompson, 83, remains as enthusiastic as ever and the evergreen Newton-by-the-Sea permit holder belatedly got off the mark for the current campaign with Loch Frisa (Ben Smoult) in the 3m Crusoe Lower Largo Maiden Race.
In a slowly run affair, the former Ben Pauling-trained gelding was slightly quicker away from the last than the challenging Libero (Nick Orpwood), and held on well in a driving finish to score by half-a-length.
This was also a welcome second career winner for Smoult, more than four years after opening his account on Game As A Pheasant at Hexham.
Foxinthebox beat Carrhill by a rapidly diminishing head at Overton earlier in the month, and that form was franked on Saturday when Foxinthebox followed up in the Ladies Open and Carrhill went one better in the Restricted Race.
Given a positive ride by Amy Milburn, Ross Wilson-trained Foxinthebox made every yard of the running in the 3m House of Design Architects Ladies Open Race and cruised home a distance in front of Batman For Ever (Amy Coltherd). His next target is a Perth Hunters’ Chase on May 13.
Carrying the well known black and white striped colours of Dave Armstrong, Carrhill (Nick Orpwood) gave Broomley near Stocksfield-based Charlotte Crozier a memorable first training success with only her second runner in the 3m James Hambro & Partners Restricted Race. The six-year-old Getaway gelding, a half-brother to winning hurdler Crystal Spring, was sent on going up the hill after two out and stayed on well to beat Royal Cave (Natasha Cookson) by seven lengths.
For One Night Only’s victory in the 2m4f Turcan Connell Conditions Race for Novice Riders was a real family affair, with the seven-year-old owned by Edlingham near Alnwick farmer Gary Herdman, trained by wife Morag and ridden by son Sam. Always in the first two, he led from the fifth and pulled out a bit extra when the chips were down to keep First One D’Ana (Frances Cromarty) at bay by a length, with the improving Flicks Getaway (Eloise Justice-Vose) a further length away in third.
After failing to finish on his last three starts, Overton specialist Western Run (Eloise Justice-Vose) got his season back on track when landing the valuable 2m4f John Clark Motor Group Mixed Open Race in course record time. Produced with a well-timed challenge to hit the front between the last two fences, the eleven-year-old had five lengths to spare over Watch Law (Nick Orpwood) at the line, with long time leader Itwasfate (Fergal Holohan) a short head away in third. Regular pilot Sean Cameron, currently sidelined with a fractured wrist, hopes to be back in the saddle for the season finale at Hexham on May 16.
The 138cm Pony Race for Novice Riders sponsored by Campion Homes was won by Trefnant Armstrong (Abigail Wood) from Durran Pinnochio (Susannah Montague) and Auchmaliddie Fortuna (Angus Reid), while the Open Pony Race sponsored by Butchery At Bowhouse and Cargilfield School & Nursery was won by Obsidian Nights (Anya McWilliam) from Dorlyn May Destiny (Freya Cuthill) and Warmwell Lizzie (Angus Dixon).
After 10 of the 11 Northern Area meetings, the average number of runners per race is 6.52, while the ratio of runners to individual horses entered is a healthy 75.09%.
The Northern Area season concludes with the Haydon fixture at Hexham Racecourse on Saturday 16th May, where a six-race card starts at 2.00pm.
