On Sunday, 26th April, Stafford Cross hosted the latest point-to-point meeting in the Devon & Cornwall area. The team had worked hard to prepare good racing ground for their meeting, still watering on the morning of race day and were rewarded with good to firm, good in places as the official going on the day. The right-handed track is flat and sharp, and the course builders had the fences well-presented and well up to size.

3 went to post in the WBW Solicitors sponsored Axe Vale Members Race. Unsurprisingly, Al Gasparo went off 1/6 favourite under Josh Newman, having won on his 4 previous starts this season, and led the way until fence 15, but soon fell, which saw Darren Andrews take up the lead on Joly Maker from Fionn Summers and Captain Nigel. Approaching 3 from home, Summers pulled up Captain Nigel on his first run between the flags, leaving Andrews to take the easy win. It was a poignant moment with Andrews winning the 2026 renewal, as 10 years ago, he rode Overafrica to win for Lauren Reed, trainer and partner to Andrews.

Next up was the J & FJ Baker sponsored Intermediate, 4 of the 7 entries were declared, with the Will Biddick trained Far Out West a short price favourite at the bookmakers. Both Boys Will Be Boys and Reflex Action couldn’t match the pace of the leaders and were pulled up after fence 14. Newman set a strong pace with Far Out West, but it was Clonagoose and Ed Vaughan that got the lead on the inside rail on the turn for home and held onto that lead, winning by 7 lengths. This brought the partnership’s tally to 5 wins from 6 starts this season. This also brought Emma Summersby another winner and takes her season’s winner tally into double figures.

The hotly contested Lee Clifford Engineering sponsored Mixed Open saw Lucas Murphy bidding for his first winner in the Devon & Cornwall Area in his novice campaign. The 3 runners were tightly bunched throughout the race, and even at the 2nd last fence all 3 jumped it upsides each other. The Paul Nicholls trained Emailandy was the first to fade after the last fence and although Duc de Bourbon and Ed Dogrell put up a good fight, it was Anna Johnston who did the boys on the line and won by 2 lengths. Walkin Out was a handful throughout the race and always looked like she had gas left in the engine, and her jockey knew when to push the button at the perfect time. Johnston was delighted to get another winner for Les Jefford, who reached his 100th winner as a trainer with this very mare last season at Trebudannon in the Ladies Open.

Sadly, despite the Totnes & Bridgetown Racing Company Conditions race attracting 12 entries, it was not well supported on the day and resulted in a walkover for the Chris Barber trained Jewel In The Park. Unfortunately for Barber, walkovers do not count towards the national championship, in which he now sits in 3rd place, just 1 point behind Newman and 3 points behind the leader, Gina Andrews.

The penultimate race was the Lentells Accountants Restricted and saw 2 finishers in a 4 runner race. The Heidi McCreesh trained Top Button pulled up after just 1 circuit, and although Gig In The Park finished a very distant 3rd past the winning post, his jockey, Walter Barnett, was later disqualified for failing to weigh in. Kow Boy Sivola fell back into 2nd place and began to weaken under Amber Jackson-Fennell after the 3rd last. Favourite backers were overjoyed to see Charlie Marshall steering Follow My Order over the line to win by 20 lengths for trainer, Michael Felton. Follow My Order made it all worth it for Marshall, who had flown back from America on the morning of race day after winning his 2nd Maryland Hunt Cup. It was extra special as he became a proud father shortly before leaving for America to ride in the formidable race.

6 runners went to post in the last race of the day, the Scott Rowe Solicitors sponsored NWFAA Maiden. Stick or Twist refused to start for the second time this season and since 2023 has achieved a career best of 4th on his first run in a flat race at Buckfastleigh. Walter Barnett pulled up 12-year-old Kates Lane after fence 14, but had already lost touch with the leading pack from fence 11. Ballinoulart led the pack until fence 8 when the favourite, Suvla Bay, took the lead under Henry Moore. Lady Wilhelmina travelled well throughout the race but found herself outpaced in the final lap on her 3rd completion between the flags. Hannibal Bogan and Otis Morgan were trying to keep in step with the leading pair, and it was Bllinoulart who came back to Hannibal Bogan, and they tussled for 2nd and 3rd, with Hannibal Bogan settling for 3rd by only a head. At this point, Henry Moore had kicked for home on Suvla Bay and drew well clear after 3 out and won impressively by 29 lengths for the Thomas Family.

Having a local family owned and trained winner close the day sums up the point-to-point community and the Thomas family were welcomed into the paddock by a roar of applause. The day wasn’t over for racegoers though, as the Axe Vale team had secured a live band to play in their marquee to provide ever popular post racing entertainment in the sunshine.

Next up, we head back to Flete Park on bank holiday Saturday for their Totnes & Bridgetown Racing Company meeting. The day starts with pony racing from 1 pm and point-to-point racing from 2 pm.
