The second of two meetings is being held at the picturesque Flete Park on Saturday. It really is one of the best Point to Point venues in the country and they hold various other entertainment in their Countryside arena. The six race card kicks off at 2pm with Pony racing starting at 1pm. Entry is £15 per person with under 16s going free. Postcode PL21 9NU.
The SW Law & Finance Members, Subscribers and Farmers Race
Six horses are entered for the opener with Fighter Allen and Getaway Drumlee looking the two standouts. Fighter Allen has been giving James Pyman some lovely spins this season with a 2nd to Call Simon being the standout at Buckfastleigh. Getaway Drumlee got his head in front under Hannah Morgan at Didmarton but was disappointing when pulling up quickly at Trebudannon when last seen. The Treneer Family are big supporters of Flete Park and have a lot to do with the running of both meetings and they bring forward Ballydesmond and Pirate’s Tales for brothers Michael and Barnaby to ride.
The Fawns Farm Maiden (NWFAA) Race
Devon Rogue, trained by Rebecca Vanstone, caught the eye at Lower Machen on debut when finishing 3rd to Taktics. Martin Sweetland will be hoping for a change of luck and with a clear run, could see Alyson Dalton run well after finishing 2nd to Savant Du Mesnil at Cotley. She was unfortunately carried out at this meeting two weeks ago. Amber Jackson-Fennell and Ed Rees have partnered up this season to have plenty of success and will be hoping that Down The Valley can go better than her 3rd at Garthorpe back in November. Susan Darke brings forward Slaney Walk, who was third at this course two weeks ago and will have come on for the run. Joshua Newman has the ex National Hunt mare, Ghost Jury entered. She has had a disappointing career on the track and hopefully will benefit from the switch to Point to Points.
The Rathbones Restricted
Emma Summersby and Jack Stenhouse teamed up two weeks ago to take the Maiden here with Absolut Grey and they are back again to try and clinch the Restricted. Absolut Grey had been knocking on the door for a while so it was great to see him gain his first success. Dance Ifyoucan put up an impressive first run in Britain when winning the Maiden at Kilworthy, despite showing plenty of greenness. He should be an exciting prospect for the Josh Newman team. Chris Barber is enjoying an incredible season and Taktics added to his winners when coming home in front at Lower Machen two weeks ago. Course winner, One Tree Hill, was the unlucky side of a photo finish at Cotley and then unfortunately got brought down at the same course two weeks later. There would be big celebrations in trainer Louise Kittow’s ‘party bus’, if he got the job done!
The Totnes & Bridgetown Races Company Ladies Open
Josh Newman holds three of the seven entries for the Ladies Open. Hearts Corner won a Ladies on his first outing of the season under Ellie Callwood and has been piloted by Josh since to take the Westcountry Champion Chase at Buckfastleigh and the Cornish National at Trebudannon. Beacon Edge has won two this season but was a disappointing 3rd of three at Cotley last time out, when going off a short priced favourite. Caspers Court has given owner/rider Matilda Garton two nice rides around Trebudannon and he wasn’t far beaten at this course under a different jockey last year. Gina Andrews has Tigerbythetail entered here for Molly Legg and the pair have been in the winners enclosure twice this season already. Wick Green and Alice Frampton were fortunate winners at this meeting two weeks ago when promoted to first place after the winner had gone the wrong side of a marker. Jeu Gagnant was too good for Ed Rees’ Camino Rocio last time out but again, could find competition just as strong in this race.
The Marchand Petit Flete Park Races Conditions Race (2m4f)
The Conditions Race is over the shorter trip of 2m4f and a possible nine could head to post. Talimar Pearl is the standout entry for Josh Newman and the drop in trip would not be a problem for him. He beat Jeu Gagnant at Cherrybrook a month ago and backed that up by taking the Members Race at Cotley a fortnight ago. Josh also has Getaway Drumlee entered but the Members Race looks an easier option for him. James Bowley-Farleigh has Glory entered, who was last seen winning at Hexham Point to Point in May of last year for another local jockey. Otis Morgan. Lady Reset may have needed her first run of the season at Cherrybrook but will appreciate the drop in trip and Anna Johnston and Les Jefford have teamed up to win six races together this season.
The Dream TV & Film Catering Maiden Race (2m4f)
The biggest field of the day could be the last race with 11 entered for this, again over the shorter trip of 2m4f. Several are double entered in both Maidens but for those that aren’t, Stick Season for Chris Barber catches the eye. He has been knocking on the door all season and most recently finished 2nd to What A Pleasure at Chilfrome. Josh Newman will be hoping for a change of fortune with Cherry Lane, who unseated him at the second here two weeks ago. She ran well at Trebudannon and is a full sister to the prolific Jet Smart. Josh also has the newcomer Penarthur entered. From the family of Grand National winner One For Arthur, he was purchased as a 3yo by Josh’s wife, Kayley, at Goffs UK Store Sale last May. Ocean View finished 2nd on debut for Gina Andrews and Zac Baker is booked to ride this 4 year old again for his second appearance on a racecourse.
