Last week I highlighted Dollanstown as a horse to follow next season. He had lost his maiden tag back in February at Badbury Rings when fancied but not the favourite. Market leader that day was Prince in the Park, a tall, imposing son of Walk in the Park and a half brother to several 125+ rated performers including Middle Distance Veterans Champion, The Flier Begley. Prince in the Park finished third that day, turning with blood in his nose, but subsequently, on better ground he remains unbeaten, his latest success a bloodless 30 length victory at Tabley. It’s often difficult to be precise (in handicapping terms) when assessing a race littered with fallers and at a meeting where the sun shone all day to incrementally speed up ground conditions, but sometimes you need to take a leap of faith when calculating speed figures and I have gone with my initial assessment – allotting Prince in The Park a cautionary rating of 118. A more cautious approach might project one of 106. Either way Prince of the Park is clearly a progressive sort who should be followed.
There are no such doubts regarding Cloonagoose (110) who broke the course record at Stafford Cross when getting better of the useful Far Out West. Emma Summersby’s five year old has never finished out of the first two, losing only to the equally promising The Dancing Tree at Kingston Blount, and is one of several in the running for the ‘Champion Horse’ Trophy – awarded to the winning most horse during the season.
Citizen Jane (93) is far less prolific and, being by Scorpion, is probably far from straightforward, but nevertheless looked an improved performer when taking the opening contest at Woodford. This was her first run for the Chris Barber yard and she jumped well in the lead before running out a cosy winner. Clearly well suited by faster conditions, she can win again this term.
Another well suited to a sound surface is Western Run (112) , hitherto below form this season having landed a hat-trick at the back end of last . Normally novice ridden, his usual jockey was out of action following a fall last time out, but another young rider ably stepped in and although further opportunities are drying up on the Northern circuit, he is worth a further spin this year.
