Vauterhill played host to bank holiday Monday racing on 4th May and, like always, enjoyed a crowd of young farmers and holiday makers in the rolling hills of North Devon. The Stevenstone team had worked hard prepping the course and maintaining good racing ground in the challenging dry conditions.

First up, we saw 3 runners go to post for the Lomas Helicopters & D S Electricals Conditions race. Len Brennan was the pick of the entries in the preview written by Lauren Reed following his seasonal reappearance at Chilfrome, and the bookmakers agreed, sending him off 2/5f. On the day he was ridden by Josh Newman, who has been enjoying riding for Will Biddick this season, now Biddick has retired from race riding. Fionn Summers had to work hard aboard Makety to keep up with the pace of the leading pair, Investment Manager and Len Brennan. Investment Manager jumped into the lead at fence 14 under Ashley Dascombe, who was riding with confidence after having a winner at Flete two days before. Investment Manager pulled well clear after the 2nd last, and on the run down to the final fence, Makety began to reel in Len Brennan and landed in front coming up the home straight. Dascombe looked back at his rivals after jumping the last and won comfortably by 11 lengths for winning owners Mr & Mrs Dascombe.

4 ran in a very competitive Restricted race sponsored by Commodore Hotel & Blue Box Self Storage. Chris Barber trained Taktics was sent off 5/4 joint favourite with What A Pleasure, trained by Heidi McCreesh. What A Pleasure looked to be enjoying her run under Fionn Summers until Newman pushed Winding Lake into the lead 4 from home. Meanwhile, Supple made her move up the inside on the top bend with Zalando. Heading into the open ditch, it was Taktics under Ed Doggrell who appeared not to keep up with the quickening pace as they dropped back to last. The final fence served up serious drama when Winding Lake got it all wrong out in front, and What A Pleasure couldn’t get out the landing gear when falling. Supple kept her inside line on Zalando and was out in front after the last, winning by 4 lengths, leaving the boys, Newman and Doggrell behind her. Supple is enjoying her 23rd season of pointing, and this experience clearly paid off here.

The third race of the day was the R & CH Wilson Builder Ltd and Fernley Lott Architects Mixed Open. 18-year-old jockey, Ella Stone, was searching for her first win between the flags and partnered with 9-year-old Cluain Aodha, trained and owned by Ellie Hatcher. With a circuit left to go, Stone was the back marker of the 3 horses with Mount Sinai and Beacon Edge going stride for stride out in front. Beacon Edge was driven out to the lead by Newman after fence 13, at which Cluain Aodha unseated Stone, leaving Newman and Jimmy Munro to battle it out. Newman drew further clear on the former Gordon Elliot trained, Beacon Edge and outstayed Mount Sinai, winning by 30 lengths. This was an important win for the Newman team, who sit 2nd in the National trainers title, behind Gina Andrews and Barber sitting in 3rd.

The second Conditions race drew 2 runners and was sponsored by Totnes & Bridgetown & FC Cleaning. The race was run in 2 halves, with Madame Le’strange leading until fence 8 under Henry Moore and Hidden Heroics picking up the lead with just over a circuit to go. Hidden Heroics has been giving Harry Neale a perfect first season, pointing with 3 wins in the bag prior to this race. Moore came here on the back of a win at Axe Vale in the Maiden race for the Thomas family. Neale headed into the 3rd last with a 6-length advantage and kept on pushing to the 2nd last when he got in close and left Moore a chance to gain some ground. Both horses got a great jump at the last, but it was the ultimate stayer, Hidden Heroics, that was driven out to the line by Neale to win by a neck.

The Jockey Club & VVF Containers and Cabins sponsored Mares Maiden attracted 7 runners with Ms Belle going off as 2/1f on her racecourse debut for the in form Doggrell and Barber jockey/trainer partnership. Clody Pearl was looking to give trainer Harriet Waight her second winner this season when leading the field until the last fence. First to pull up was 6-year-old Pretty Spontaneous under Jimmy Munro at 4 from home, followed by Stuart Sampson trained Uptolittlelady. Thunder Fly was enjoying her race in second behind Clody Pearl for trainer Annabelle Bacon, who was trying to find her first winner of the season, but she soon pulled up 3 from home and was saved for another day. Dart of Ginger for Newman and Ms Belle began to make their move on the approach to the open ditch for the final time. Moore joined the fight on Troubleisontheway, who had been sitting in behind for most of the race. Doggrell tried to take up the lead two from home, but Ms Belle made a blunder, leaving Troubleisontheway to move up the inside. At the last fence, Dart of Ginger made a mistake finishing 4th behind long time leader Clody Pearl. Moore and Doggrell battled to the line, but it was the Dani Kenealy trained Troubleisontheway that got her head in front to win.

The card closed with the Brewer Harding & Rowe & Equi Dry sponsored Maiden race, which drew 6 runners. Ed Vaughan has been enjoying a good season riding winners for Emma Summersby and race goers agreed when they backed Monderra to go off evens favourite. Gealach lariann gave Bobbi Manning her first runner as jockey, trainer and owner, and the pair had previously been enjoying hunter trials before formally starting their point-to-point training this season. Ed Doggrell stole the lead and kept it for most of the race on board Montana Golden for trainer Charlotte Walker, who was searching for her first winner since May 2017. Summer Halo was the first to pull up 3 from home under Anna Johnston, soon followed by Gealach lariann. Fire Squadron made up ground and chased leaders up to fence 13 but then found himself outpaced. Meanwhile, Newman and Vaughan rode patiently back in 2nd and 3rd to Montana Golden, who continued to lead. Newman meant business when chasing down the leader, and an untidy jump from Montana Golden 2 from home gave Newman an open door. Newman and Doggrell landed upside each other, but it was the Biddick trained Run Ruby Run who pulled away under Newman and won by 3 lengths.

Two thrilling maidens closing the day’s racing gave punters a lot to be excited about, who stayed long after the final race, enjoying the sunshine.

This weekend, we head to Upcott Cross for their Eggesford meeting on Sunday 10th May.
