The Knutsford Races at Tabley on Sunday has forty-six entries for the six races. There are three pony races commencing at one o’clock with the points-to-points starting an hour later.

The featured Lord Daresbury Classic at 4.25 for West Mercian qualified horses has five entries and Heidi Brookshaw’s Buzzard Trix will be bidding to win the race for the third year running. The twelve-year-old has won the last five times he has run at the course, so he will prove hard to beat. Poncherello has been consistent and tends to prefer good or faster ground. Rewritetherules was ridden by Huw Edwards here last month and ran his best race for a while when runner-up to Lavorante. However, Buzzard Trix is a confident selection.

The opening Maiden has nine entries with Cost A Fortune, Dark Soldier, Empress Eugenie and Ifyouhaveaplan looking to have the best form. Cost A Fortune and Empress Eugenie are both trained by Francesca Poste and each came third in successive Maidens at Chaddesley Corbett last month. Either of them would have place prospects. Ifyouhaveaplan ran a promising race when an eight-length fourth to stable companion Willielle at Witton Castle a fortnight ago. Dark Soldier has improved throughout the season and passed Pip Pirrip on the run-in at Eyton a fortnight ago, but was collared close home. The eight-year-old should be good enough to win here.

The Mixed Open over two-and-a-half miles has attracted the largest field with thirteen entries. The leading contenders are A Jet of Our Own, Boley Bob and Jewel in The Park. A Jet of Our Own was going well in the lead in a similar race at Eyton a fortnight ago, when he missed a marker at half-way and unseated his rider. Chris Barber’s Jewel in The Park has won his four races this season including an Open at Holnicote last Sunday. However, Joe O’Shea thinks the world of Boley Bob who keeps on improving and won a Hunter Chase at Kelso with consummate ease last month. If the three main protagonists declare it could be a very exciting race, with preference given to Boley Bob.

The PPORA Restricted has seven entries and Citizen Jane, Karaktere D’Enfer, Peaceinthevalley and Spanish Darling make most appeal. Spanish Darling won a point bumper at Maisemore Park and followed up with a Maiden win here last month. The maiden Peaceinthevalley put in a promising performance when coming third in the Heart of All England Hunter Chae at Hexham last Saturday. Citizen Jane looked well in winning his Members at Woodford last month. Karaktere D’Enfer won a Maiden at Chaddesley Corbett and was convincing when he followed up in his Members at Howick in March. Jo Priest’s six-year-old has an excellent opportunity to record a hat-trick.

The PPORA Conditions (Level 2) is for trainers with up to five registered horses and has six entries. Nephin Beg has improved through the season and easily won a Conditions Race at Witton Castle a fortnight ago. Sambesi won a match at Garthorpe earlier in the season where he dead heated with Fumet D’Oudairies. Poncherello has good course form and would be competitive if he runs here.

Amidnightstar won a Conditions (Level 3) at this track last month and escapes a penalty here. Tom Britten’s mare will receive twelve pounds from her main rivals which could tilt the balance in her favour.

The concluding Conditions (Level 3) has six entries and the ones to focus on are Eileen’s Milan, Grand Soir and Western Cowboy. Western Cowboy and Grand Soir each have a couple of placed efforts this season. However, the best form so far has been shown by Eileen’s Milan who won a Restricted at Cothelstone and has been close up in subsequent Intermediate races.
