The National Point-to-Point awards took place for the second year running in The Panoramic Restaurant at Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday evening.
Hosted by blue mic presenter Hannah Baycroft and popular commentator Robbie Scott the evening went well, a game of heads and tails raised over £700 for Racing Welfare and following the presentation of awards the brilliant band, Presley Rain, played into the early hours keeping the crowd entertained.
Whilst we were sadly missing some award winners due to other commitments, a huge amount of support for Devon’s Josh Newman was present. Newman was winning the Foran Equine trainers championship for yards with over 15 horses for the third time. He said: “We are a huge team and I couldn’t do it without them, this award is for them all.” He added: “Will Biddick is here with us this evening and I would like to just say a huge thank you to him for all he has done for our sport, he was the best jockey we had seen during his career in the saddle and has turned his talents to training now.”
Lauren Reed from Josh Newman’s yard took home the title of Jockey Club Stable Employee of The Year Awards 2026 as voted for by the public.
Biddick was nominated for the Venatour Racing Around The World Champagne Moment of The Year for training an incredible five-timer at Badbury Rings alongside Ed Doggrell who had fantastic season in the saddle riding 33 winners and finishing third in the Men’s National Championship but the winner was Henry Crow; Crow of course won both the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters’ on Joe O’Shea trained Barton Snow. Crow said: “To be nominated was great, to win is wonderful! I am a proper amateur who juggles riding with the family farm and property developing. Thank you to Venatour for sponsoring this award.”
A large Welsh contingent were also present to see both Luke Price and Dewi Haddock collect awards. Sixteen-year-old Haddock collected the winning prize for the Jockey Club and PPA Hands and Heels series. A new initiative sponsored by The Jockey club and the PPA, the ten-race series has been well supported. Price took the Foran Equine sponsored trainers championship in the category of six-14 horses and he was understandably thrilled. He said: “It has been a fantastic season and I can’t thank my team enough. Evie works so hard and James (King) is a very important part, he rides them all so well. He is a magician!” Price also collected the award for Leading horse with his Lavorante who won three races within the last ten days of the season clinching the trophy from Clonagoose.
John and Sonia Gardener, long-time owners within the sport won the Leading owner award for the first time. Clonagoose who they own in partnership alongside their own Woodstock Octo and Clondaw Drake were all multiple winners throughout the season secured this award.
Another 16-year-old Lucas Murphy brought with him a large entourage to celebrate his Highflyer Bloodstock Men’s Novice rider title and also picked up the PPORA Wilkinson Sword, reflecting on his superb debut season in which he rode 18 winners he reflected: “I am very lucky, I have gained great support from not only my family but also many trainers. I intend to stay point-to-pointing at least next season.”
The Ladies Novice championship went the way of Katie Featherstone, aged 30 Featherstone has this season made her presence felt, again gaining more connections and rode 11 winners. She said: “It has been a brilliant season, my own two horses were brilliant and won a couple each but I had great support from Rob Varnham and David Phelan.”
Gina Andrews won the Goffs Women’ s national title for the 11th time and Ellie Callwood took the runner-up spot.
Jennifer Owen won the Oriental Club sponsored small trainer award for trainers with no more than five horses and although unable to attend she said: “We have had another fantastic season, as a team we are so busy and I couldn’t do it without Claire Sparks who goes pointing with all the runners and does a superb job.”
James King clinched his fifth Tattersalls Cheltenham sponsored Men’s title and said: “Another brilliant season, there are so many people to thank, Luke Price supports me hugely and is a brilliant trainer, with the injury to Izzie Hill early season I picked up lots of winners from the Hill yard and I am very grateful to all my supporters of whom none of this would be achievable.”
Josh Newman was runner up in the Men’s title.
Molly Armytage won the PPORA Princess Royal trophy for the leading female novice rider, Gina Andrews took the award for overall leading rider in PPORA sponsored races and Cliff Myers secured the leading owner award.
Three instrumental women to the sport picked up awards recognising their outstanding support to point-to-pointing, Ilona Barnett, Hilary Mactaggart and Fiona Needham all of whom were present to collect their awards.
