One of 18 lots in Goffs Coral Gold Cup Sale, the four-year-old (pictured above) was knocked down to bloodstock agent Jerry McGrath for £90,000 on his way to a berth with trainer Ben Pauling. McGrath, a former jump jockey, headed interest from underbidder Lucinda Russell who was joined at the ring by her partner, Peter Scudamore.
Baron Du Brizais was consigned from the Warwickshire stable of Luca Morgan, joint-owner of the horse with his partner, Paige Topley, who was on leading-up duties. McGrath said of his purchase: “He’s a good advert for British point-to-pointing. He was very impressive when making a winning debut at Lower Machen and Luca has a good connection to Ben’s yard so we knew a bit about the horse. He is also qualified for a £15,000 bonus, which added to his appeal.”

Winners of races in the GB Pointing YHM Series will collect a money bonus if winning a developmental hurdle or chase within two years from the yard of a trainer based in Britain. British-bred pointers can earn a £25,000 bonus, while horses bred overseas like Baron Du Brizais can collect £15,000.
Morgan said after the sale: “I’m happy with the price – I feel we got a fair price for him, and the buyer has got value, too, so everyone’s happy. I’m pleased he’s going to a good home. He was a €15,000 store, so you cannot complain when you turn a profit like that, and hopefully he can go on and show his new owner what he’s shown us.
“We ran a four-year-old at Hexham today [Via Romano] and he was second so we were pleased with him. He might be sold now, or we could run him again, and we have plenty of three-year-olds to run at four in the New Year.”
