A point-to-point flat race at Bitterley in Shropshire last month led to a sparkling result at Stratford yesterday.

Lord Cauvelliere, a four-year-old son of French stallion Choeur Du Nord and ridden by Zac Baker for trainer Gina Andrews, won the Bitterley race (pictured above) by four lengths from Eddie My Eagle. The winner was subsequently sent to Tattersalls Cheltenham’s April Sale where he was knocked down for £15,000 to licensed trainer Sheila Lewis. Eddie My Eagle also moved stables, leaving Max Young’s yard and joining Dan Horsford.

Yesterday at Stratford the two horses met again in a ten-runner bumper and once again they finished first and second. Lord Cauvelliere, ridden by former novice men’s point-to-point champion Callum Pritchard, was sent off at 8/1 with Eddie My Eagle a 9/2 chance, but it was the lesser-fancied runner who came out on top when showing a decisive turn of foot to win going away by five lengths.

British point-to-pointers are showing time and again that they can make the grade under rules, and, as £15,000 buy Lord Cauvelliere proves, they are good value for money.
