Ffos Las winner So They Say has joined trainer Lucinda Russell after changing hands for £30,000 at Goffs UK’s December P2P Sale yesterday.
The five-year-old daughter of Malinas (pictured above) made her point-to-point debut for Devon trainer Ed Walker at the Welsh course two weeks ago when she lined up in a seven-runner Jockey Club Mares’ Maiden race. Ridden by Chloe Emsley she won by 12 lengths and 25 lengths in the colours of her owner/breeder, Julian Selby.
Yesterday she was back in Wales for the sale, which took place at Yorton Stud near Welshpool in Powys. There she became Russell’s second purchase of a British pointer, the first having been the hugely exciting Ahoy Senor, who last Saturday won his first novices’ chase when routing his opponents in a race at Newbury.
Russell said of So They Say: “I really loved her and I like Malinas as a sire. At Aintree [tomorrow] I’m running Mighty Thunder by Malinas and a very nice mare called Aurora Thunder, who is also by Malinas and who reminds me of this mare. It seems like a good time to be buying point-to-pointers.
“I’ve bought her on spec, but we seem to be getting on really well with fillies and mares at the moment, and they have residual value for breeding.
“Ahoy Senor could go to Kempton at Christmas [for the Gr.1 Feltham Novices’ Chase] if the ground is soft enough, or he could go to Warwick. He’s absolutely fine after Newbury.”
The only other British pointer on offer at yesterday’s 19-lot sale was Tilly Toughnut, who landed a Ffos Las bumper on the same card. Consigned by trainer James Ridley the four-year-old filly was led from the ring unsold when bidding halted at £70,000.
