The Point-to-Point Authority (PPA) is delighted to announce the launch of the GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden Series, a landmark initiative to support young horse development within British point-to-pointing, strengthening connections with the sales market and supporting British racing and breeding with the first race in the series taking place at Lower Machen on 9 November 2025.

Funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) and developed in conjunction with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the series is part of a wider £4 million-plus range of initiatives aimed at increasing GB foal numbers and improving the number and quality of GB bred and trained horses.

“This is only one strand of several new initiatives we’re introducing this season and is indicative of the growing relationships we’re forming across the wider racing community,” said Paul Miller, Chief Executive of the Point-to-Point Authority. “Support for pointing from racing stakeholders has never been stronger, and we’ve a number of new announcements to make ahead of the coming season which starts in November.”

Winners of these races will qualify for a bonus when they win their first development race over hurdles or fences under Rules during the next two core Jump seasons. The bonus payments will be £25,000 for a British-bred horse and £15,000 for a horse bred elsewhere.

Miller added:

“It is hoped these races they will be more competitive, producing not only better-quality winners but also placed horses. Although inevitably many of them will go to the sales ring before moving under Rules, these horses were probably always destined to do that anyway. Producing higher quality winners should also produce higher sales figures, which will give us some great headlines to market. It is anticipated this will in turn attract more young horses to start out pointing, with the hope being many will stay, boost our numbers and progress through the levels. It’s also hoped that we’ll see some big future stars and household names start out this way.”

BHA Director of Racing, Richard Wayman, said:

“Many of our most successful horses and jockeys have stared their careers competing in point-to-points, making the sphere an important development ground for future stars.

The new GB Pointing Bonus aims to strengthen this pipeline and support wider efforts to increase the number of higher quality horses being bred, owned, trained and raced in Britain.

We hope that the qualifying races will showcase some potentially very talented horses who can then progress to race under Rules and rise through the ranks of the British Jump scene.

Our thanks to the Horserace Betting Levy Board for funding the maiden series and to the Point-to-Point Authority, Tattersalls Cheltenham and Goffs UK for their commitment to this exciting initiative.”

HBLB Chief Executive, Alan Delmonte, said:

“HBLB is pleased to award £250,000 in funding for the new GB Pointing Bonus scheme. We recognise the vital contribution that point-to-pointing makes to National Hunt racing and are committed to supporting initiatives that aim to develop and improve the calibre of young horses coming through the point-to-point route, increasing their chances of success under Rules.
