Barton Snow, this season’s outstanding hunter chaser on either side of the Irish Sea, has been roughed off for a summer break.
Trainer Joe O’Shea entered the nine-year-old (pictured above under Henry Crow) for the mixed open race at Tabley on Sunday, but says he will instead be represented by stablemate Gracchus De Balme. He won the Aintree Foxhunters’ Chase and Stratford’s Pertemps Champion Hunters’ Chase last season, but has not hit the same heights in recent months.
“You could say that,” said O’Shea, “although he ran a cracking race at Aintree on his last start and is only coming to himself. He loves the spring. We’ve put him in a point-to-point because he’ll be for sale at the end of the season and we wanted to show he was in good health and capable of winning. He’ll run on Sunday [under Henry Crow] and then go for a hunters’ chase at Cartmel.
“We’d like to sell him to stay in the yard, perhaps for a novice rider because he jumps so well. Pa King got off him at Aintree and said he’s a brilliant jumper.”
Expanding on the decision to finish Barton Snow for the season, O’Shea said: “It’s been killing me to start leaving his rug off, but he’s run four times and done everything we could have asked of him. We considered going to Punchestown, but it’s worth €18,000 and by the time you factor in travel and so on, and then divide the prize between six owners we decided to give it a miss.”
Recent Kelso hunters’ chase winner Boley Bob is also finished for the season, said O’Shea, adding: “He’s half qualified for Cheltenham next season [Festival Hunters’ Chase] and has to finish first or second in a hunters’ chase. If he can’t do that he’s not good enough to go.
“When Henry got off him at Kelso he surprised me when he said, ‘If Cheltenham was in three weeks’ time I’d be on this one’.
“I looked at Unibet prices for next year’s Cheltenham Festival race and they’ve put Barton Snow favourite, Boley Bob second fav and then It’s On The Line.”
Sunday’s meeting at Tabley will be the penultimate one before it closes as a point-to-point venue.
A social media post from Knutsford Races said: ‘It is with sadness that we confirm Sunday 17th May 2026 will mark the final Point-to-Point meeting at the beautiful Tabley House.
‘While a new venue is currently being considered for next year to host both Tabley Races and Knutsford Races, we need your support now more than ever. A strong turnout at both fixtures will play a vital role as we look ahead to this next chapter.
‘We have been privileged to enjoy 25 wonderful years at Tabley, and we extend our sincere thanks for their support over that time. Sadly, as with many things, times change.
‘We look forward to seeing you at Tabley Races this Sunday, and at Knutsford Races on Sunday 17th May.’
