Polly Gundry, who has lost her position as the winning-most woman point-to-point rider to Gina Andrews, has paid tribute to the new record holder

Warwickshire-based Andrews took her score level with Gundry’s 303 winners when winning on Dubai Quest at Chaddesley Corbett on Tuesday, then three days later at Horseheath she set a new mark when scoring on Fumet D’Oudairies. The two horses are trained by Andrews’ husband Tom Ellis, and both are in contention for a crack at the Cheltenham Festival Hunters’ Chase.

Speaking at Larkhill yesterday, Gundry said: “I couldn’t be happier that the record has been taken by such an outstanding rider.

“I look at Gina riding and think to myself, I hope I rode in that way, if only sometimes. My god she’s strong, and can really get hold of a horse, but she also shows great empathy for the horses she’s riding.”

Andrews, who rode a double on the Horseheath card, currently holds three well-established records and has a share in one – her tally of 305 point-to-point winners is the most by a woman [on either side of the Irish Sea], she has ridden 69 Jump winners under Rules, more than any other woman amateur, while the 58 point-to-point winners she rode in 2018/19 smashed the number of winners by a woman in one season (beating a score of 40 set by Polly Curling in 1995). She has also won eight senior championships, a record she shares with Gundry and David Turner.
