Myfanwy Miles, after whom the multiple point-to-point winner Lady Myfanwy was named, has incurred serious injuries while harness racing.
Stella Havard, former point-to-point press officer in the Welsh Borders area, said: “Myfanwy had a bad fall from a sulky during a race at Penybont on Saturday. She was initially knocked out, but regained consciousness before being taken to hospital in Hereford where she was found to have multiple fractures and internal bleeding. Luckily it has now stabilized and the horse she was driving was caught immediately and was fine.”
Currently the most senior driver on the Wales & Border Harness Racing Club circuit, Miles and her late husband Paul shot to fame within point-to-pointing when Lady Myfanwy and Findlay’s Find spearheaded their small stable. Lady Myfanwy, who Paul bought for £500 at market, went on to win 30 point-to-points and be placed in 25 from 62 starts, and she also won five hunters’ chases. Claire Hart, now point-to-point correspondent for the Racing Post, won eight races on the mare including the ladies’ hunters’ chase at Stratford in the 2010/11 season.
In that same season the Mileses’ Findlay’s Find became the leading point-to-pointer when landing nine of 13 races – as a five-year-old! Bred for the Flat, being by Medicean out of a Pivotal mare, Findlay’s Find [who is pictured top of page with rider Claire Hart and Myfanwy Miles on left] was another cheap purchase, and while he had a busy campaign as a young horse he raced until he was 12, winning 24 point-to-points and being placed in 15.
He also won a Bangor hunters’ chase, but his most prestigious victory came in the 2014 Lady Dudley Cup under Dave Mansell.
Paul Miles died aged 77 in 2019 and Havard said: “Harness racing has been keeping Myfanwy going since her husband’s death and she’s had a lot of fun with a horse called Fold Flight, who she nursed back to health from serious colic. Myfanwy is very tough and we’re all hoping she makes a speedy recovery.”
