We are continuing to look back at the 2019/20 point-to-point season and highlight some ‘Moments of the season’. This latest video picks out the first of four consecutive wins for JUST CAUSE at Ampton back in January…
Just Cause is proving to be a fabulous purchase for Norfolk’s Stearn family.
Racing from the stables of Newmarket-based trainer James Owen during the shortened 2019/20 season, Just Cause swayed out the way of rivals’ punches, countered with his own brand of strong finishes, and remained unbeaten in four starts. He recorded the same number of victories as Navanman and Fumet D’Oudairies, but an additional third place by Navanman meant he became the Connolly’s RED MILLS champion pointer.
Rupert Stearn, who rode Just Cause in each of those wins, says: “Before the season ended prematurely it was in our mind to go for the title by concentrating on point-to-points, possibly with a hunters’ chase chucked in. Dad [Simon] has owned some good horses, but never one that has recorded four wins in a row.”
This week’s Moments of the Season clip shows Just Cause opening his account for the Stearns at Ampton in January, when he carried 12st 5lb to victory in a Jockey Club & Retraining of Racehorses Veteran Conditions race. Five horses were in contention three out, and Just Cause had to dig deep to overhaul runner-up After Hours on the run-in.
That sums up the horse, says Stearn, who adds: “He ground it out well. It was his first run of the season, he was a bit fresh and pulled a bit, but stayed on up the hill to the line. He’s tough, very genuine, tries his best and is a perfect point-to-pointer; the type that can run every couple of weeks.”

Simon Stearn bought Just Cause from Tim Gredley, the former showjumper who enjoyed a couple of seasons pointing before hanging up his saddle. Rupert says: “I’m fairly friendly with Tim through showjumping and general Newmarket life. He talked to me about trying pointing and I said, ‘You come from a horse background, give it a crack – it’s great fun’.
“I rode Just Cause in a hunters’ chase at Catterick when Tim couldn’t take the ride, but he must have thought I’d given him a bad ride, because next time Jack Andrews got the call up. The only way I was going to get back on the horse was to buy him!
“When Tim decided to pack up he offered me his horses and we came to a deal – part of it was that they stayed with James, but we’ve known James a long time and he’s trained other horses for us.
“We also train horses at home, but we struggle being on very, very flat land and it’s a job to get the work into them.”
The Stearns grow potatoes and cereals on their farm, but they have a few fields set aside for holidaying racehorses, and Rupert reports that Just Cause is “looking very good”, as he soaks up the spring weather.
