We are continuing to look back at the 2019/20 point-to-point season and highlight some ‘Moments of the season’. This latest video picks out the debut win of promising four-year-old KENYAN COWBOY at Charing in February 2020…
While Fran Nimmo and Charlie Poste were on honeymoon in Kenya last year they heard the term ‘Kenyan Cowboy’, a slang phrase denoting the local petrolheads.
Back at their stables in Warwickshire it was a fond reminder of a memorable trip and they decided to name one of their unbroken three-year-olds Kenyan Cowboy, picking out a son of Sholokhov who they thought would make it to the races in the spring of his four-year-old season. He duly made his debut in a 12-runner maiden at Charing in Kent under James King in February (pictured above left) when he lived up to the Postes’ aspirations with a clear-cut victory which is now being reviewed in this week’s Moments of the Season.
His win came at the expense of the Nigel Padfield-trained Howitsdone, who did not let the form down when on his next start he was narrowly beaten in a 14-runner maiden at High Easter.
A few days earlier Kenyan Cowboy had also made another public appearance, taking his place at Tattersalls’ Cheltenham Festival Sale where he was knocked down to licensed trainer Neil King for £45,000.
Charlie Poste says: “Some people are mistaken into thinking that when you win a point-to-point with a four-year-old first time out you will sell that horse for a six-figure sum, but that’s just not the case. Kenyan Cowboy was bought for €13,000 and resold for £45,000 eight months later – to me that’s a really good investment. I wish I could make that return on every horse we offer.
“He is a really likeable, tough and hardy horse, who would be up for it every morning. He was quite feral when we bought him and it took us a while to get on top of him, but then he thrived, and took naturally to jumping. Nothing fazed him and straight away he got into a rhythm.
“I’ve hardly spoken to Neil since the sale, but I gather they are happy with him. Hopefully he should be running in a bumper before too long.”
