As the only surviving meeting of the weekend, Charing benefitted from an injection of runners from the West – with the Hannah Marshall and Josh Newman stables both landing a brace of winners. Marshall took both divisions of the maiden with Luther (85) and Protect the Future (90) . They recorded similar times(Luther carrying 7lbs less due to his age allowance) but at this stage can only be viewed as average maiden winners.
Of more interest was Noble Blue (112) a classy winner of the PPORA Conditions race. Always travelling well, he quickened readily to the lead two from home and held off the game challenge of Call Me Early on the run to the line. The home turn proved testing throughout the day, leading to some exciting finishers, but I was inclined to think that this was more a case of Noble Blue idling a little in the finish than tiring in the ground. He should remain a potent force throughout the season. Call Me Early (112), though beaten narrowly here, confirmed the merit of his previous win at Ampton where both runner-up and third have won subsequently, and remains one to follow. He shapes as a proper stayer and courses such as High Easter will suit. Multiple winner Fame and Concrete faded to fourth but will strip fitter for the outing.
Josh Newman also took the Open with the classy ex-Rules performer Al Gasparo (104). Sent off a short odds favourite, he maintained his unbeaten record in points, but only narrowly, getting the best of a head bob with novice ridden Dalamoi, with a below par Douglas Longbottom back in third. Al Gaparo raced predominantly over distances short of three miles in Ireland and may be best suited to a hunterchase over similar shorter distances.
Here are this weekend’s best figures.
