A blank weekend on the pointing scene meant that the spotlight turned on to Hunter Chases.

It normally requires a rating of 128 or above to be competitive in the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals but additionally entry conditions require a horse to have also twice reached the first two in a Hunter Chase to qualify for the Cheltenham showpiece, twice reach the first three to qualify for the Aintree version; or have been placed in one in combination with a win in an Open.

Recent abandonments have shrunk the opportunities available to qualify but last week saw two horses impressively do so – one in an outstanding time.

Unexpected Party (132)  made all and ran out an impressive winner of the Walrus at Haydock. He is of course no dark horse having won the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival back in 2024, but that was over two miles and here he was running over a trip  further than ever  before. He saw things out well but, Haydock is a relatively fast track and Cheltenham over 3m 2f would be a different kettle of fish altogether. Aintree therefore appeals as the better option, but with one significant caveat; he has run badly on both occasions he has run there before (pulling up and being last of five).

Two days earlier, at Taunton, the Paul Nicholls trained Golden Son had been equally impressive. The time figure was only average (112) but the overall level of form places him on a par with Unexpected Party. He had put a up  a good weight carrying performance at Warwick the time before showing , in the process, that he stays three miles  but unfortunately, we have no course form at Cheltenham to go on. The stable has other contenders such as Shearer but, nevertheless, Golden Son is worth a spin at the Festival.

In a market dominated by the Irish, Unexpected Party and Golden Son are trading at around 14/1 for  Cheltenham.

Hopefully the rains will relent to allow pointing to resume this weekend and so here are the best figures for the weekend’s meetings.
