An underwhelming weekend for clock watchers with the combination of soft ground, some small fields and some unbeatable hotpots resulting in several steadily run contests. At the top end I am always on the lookout for a figure north of 120+ – one that suggests the horse may have prospects in Hunterchases. This weekend however there were none – the best being the 116 figures registered by Grace A Vous Enki and Call Me Early – and we know all about those two.
Lower down the scale Highstakesplayer (112), Driveondonn (100) and Padjoes Legacy (108) recorded figures closely aligned to their form ratings but there was only one performance that really took the eye.
Farfromaway (99) has a fairly flat jumping technique and mistakes had proved costly since a promising first appearance behind Woodstock Octo at Dunsmore. At Kingston Blount he was ridden a shade more conservatively, quickened decisively on the run to the home turn and kept on strongly to the finish. He looks the type to be suited by drying Spring ground and can win again. Runner-up Master Potter (93) is steadily improving and showed enough to suggest he can lose the maiden tag before the season’s end.
