With a relatively dry week forecast, the watering system is being called into play ahead of Shelfield Park’s meeting on Saturday (April 11th) where the six-race card is scheduled to get underway at 1.45.

Clerk of the Course Jim Squires said: “We are set to begin watering on Tuesday evening and that will carry on right up to Saturday as we strive, as always, to provide the best racing surface as possible in the circumstances

“On the plus side the course is not as fast as it was 12 months ago after a very dry start to the Spring and we have everything in place to make sure of  optimum ground conditions come raceday.”

He added: “We will be issuing an update on the ground conditions on Thursday evening and I am hopeful that will all be positive news.”

If Squires is going to be kept busy, then the same applies to Kilfilum Woods as he may well bid to follow up his easy success at Paxford on Easter Monday in either the Mens or Ladies Open.

Trainer Francesca Poste’s husband Charlie said: “We won’t make a decision about his participation until later in the week but he only had a gallop round on Monday – if he’s in good form on Friday, the likelihood is he will run again

“Whether it’s the Mens or the Ladies race remains to be seen but if James King who won on him on Monday was available on Saturday then he would be the choice. If he went for the Ladies then Ellie Holder would come into consideration.”

If the Poste’s charge makes the line-up of either contest he is going to take the beating as he thrives on decent ground and seems on good terms with himself at present.

In his absence in the Men’s contest it may well leave the way open for Go On Chez, who acts on quicker ground and goes well racing right handed. He is a live candidate having finished alone in a recent Fakenham Hunter Chase. .

The Ladies Open may not take as much winning and therefore a chance is given to Camino Rocio. The gelding shaped well when runner-up at Howick last time and that gives him a proper chance.

Camino Rocio’s connections can initiate  a double with What’s Up Harry in the opening Conditions (Level2) race as he has been consistent of late – winning at Didmarton and narrowly being touched off at Trebudannon.

The Conditions (Level 2) For Novice Riders has the look of an open heat and it may well be worth taking a flier with Torigni, who has given the impression there is a race in him before the end of the term.

He has not quite been seeing out the three mile trip in his races so far this season so the step down to 2m 4f should play into his hands and hopefully at a value price.

Monrocco Moonlight let his supporters down when fancied and  sent off 5-2 at Fakenham last time but can make handsome amends back on a more conventional course in the Restricted contest.

There a few unknown quantities entered in the concluding Maiden so it’s something of a guessing game but Avichi In The Park must come into the reckoning as he has experience on his side.

And racegoer need not worry about missing the Aintree Grand National as the World’s Greatest Steeplechase will be screened live at the course.
