If it’s the first Saturday in March – it must be Didmarton. And seven ultra competitive contests (first race scheduled off at 1pm) await racegoers at one of the undoubted highlights of the pointing season with this year’s renewal boasting a very healthy 112 entries.

Clerk of the course Jamie Tuck is happy with underfoot conditions after the recent rain. He said:”At present we are good to soft and good in places but there is a predominantly drying few days ahead and, with that in mind, I would suggest we will be racing on something approaching good and good to soft in a few places.”

The Mixed Open has attracted the largest entry on the card with connections of 25 horses considering their options on what is the busiest weekend of the season so far and local hero Doug White has a bit of head scratching to do as he decides whether Fil D’Ariane takes in this race or lines up for the opening Conditions race in which he triumphed 12 months ago.

White mixes full-time farming only a stones throw from the course with occasional race-riding and admitted he was having difficulty in making a decision about which direction to take. He commented: “If it was good to soft ground I might have to think seriously about the Open but if it was quicker conditions I’d probably favour the first race on the card

“However I need to make up my mind pretty soon as I would have to get down to 11st 7lbs in the Open while it’s 12st in what was the Members last year –  I think it might be a race against the scales if I decide to take the Open option.”

Of Fil D’Ariane, who won nicely at Larkhill recently, White added:” He has been a brilliant horse for someone like me as I just tend to shut my eyes and let him do his thing which he is pretty good at, thank goodness.”

Others to note include IK Brunel, who filled the runner-up spot in the race last March and would be favoured by drying ground along with Walkin Out following her third at Badbury Rings on her comeback outing behind the impressive Illico de Cotte.

If White elects to take in the Conditions contest than he has every chance of following up his success of a year ago. The likes of Calidad and Champagne Mystery appear to be his two main rivals.

The GB Pointing Bonus YH Maiden has been added to the card following a couple of abandonments and many of the usual suspects in these races have representatives among the entries but Electric City is the one that catches the eye.

He did little wrong when chasing home Six Two Three at Badbury Rings last month in a similar contest a couple of weeks back and the step up to three miles should be in his favour as well.

There was also much to like about the debut effort of Skeeter Rock, who went into many notebooks when runner-up behind the well touted Gallant Tide around Larkhill.

The Restricted is another wide open contest in the making and it might be worth taking a chance with J’Envoievalserenki to make amends for an unlucky defeat at Cocklebarrow as he was fortunate to stay on his feet when hitting some rough and slippery ground on the home turn.

He has been given over a month to regain his composure following that incident and could prove the value ahead of the likes of Impakt St Georges and Pax.

Many punters swear by the horses for courses maxim and they will want to be with Alaphilippe in the Conditions (Level 2)  as the 12-year-old took the corresponding race on the card in workmanlike fashion last March.

He showed he retains much of that ability when plugging on into third spot at Chaddesley Corbett earlier this term and can prove too tough a nut to crack for the likes of Glancing Hill and Up For Appeal.

The Conditions (Level 3) contest could see another horse attempt to complete back to back victories at the meeting in the shape of Western Cowboy, whose trainer Jo Priest could also be represented by Striking Out.

However, both of the above may well have a battle on their hands if Tara Storm lines up. He will be returning from a lengthy lay off but can usually be relied upon to run very well when fresh.

And finally the curtain comes down on the meeting with a Maiden that may well not take too much winning on paper and the trusty pin has landed on Mount Gay Run, who will be making his pointing debut having shown hints of ability under Rules.

Gates open at 9.30 am with pony racing getting underway at 11.30 am.
