The North Shropshire point-to-point takes place at Eyton-on-Severn on Easter Monday. The going at the beginning of the week is good to soft and Clerk of the Course Adam Wadlow is hoping for ideal racing ground with little rain forecast during the week. Seventy-four entries have been taken for the six races, which has a competitive feel to it. Racing gets underway at 1.00.
The meeting opens with two Maidens, the first of which is the Goffs Young Horse Maiden for four- and five-year-olds, over two-and-a-half miles. With bonuses available for winning on the racecourse subsequently, it will be a keenly contested race. Additionally, connections will be hoping for strong performances to boost their horse’s value at forthcoming bloodstock sales. Nine of the fifteen entries are unraced four-year-olds from top yards, so it will be a great race to savour for potential stars of the future. However, trying to predict a winner is too difficult.
The following six-year-old Maiden for six-year-olds and over has the biggest entry of eighteen. The main contenders are Artic Sting, Kasanova’s Dream, Le Vainquer, No Case to Answer, Priceforlove and Thirty Bob. Artic Sting and Priceforlove both have reasonable placed form. Kasanova’s Dream was running in novice hurdles for Gordon Elliott in Ireland, but has yet to contest a point in this country. Thirty Bob showed promise in a Hutton Rudby Maiden last month. The Bradley Gibbs trained six-year-old No Case to Answer has good consistent form and is the selection.
The Mixed Open has attracted eleven with the impressive Ludlow Hunter Chase winner Great Valley at the top of the list. However, in the likely event of the gelding’s absence, the leading prospects are Cheytac, Fumet D’Oudairies, Midnight River and Yippee Ki Yay. Gina Andrews has the choice of Cheytac and Fumet D’Oudairies who have each won two Conditions Races this season. Andrews’ sister Bridget Skelton trains Midnight River who has been rejuvenated since going pointing this season. Yippee Ki Yay, trained by West Mercian Area Secretary Nicky Sheppard has been showing promise without winning. Marginal preference is given to Midnight River.
The PPORA Club Members Conditions Race (Level 2) is for Novice Riders and has ten entries. If Yippee Ki Yay takes this option he would be hard to beat. In his absence Arctic Oscar and Premier Fantasy look to have the best chances with a slight preference for Arctic Oscar.
There are eleven entries in the Restricted which looks very competitive. The best of them could be Briskalo, Count Frollo, Fortuneville and Prohus Yank. Briskalo won a young-horse Maiden at Chaddesley Corbett in December, but was only fourth in a subsequent Restricted at Revesby Park. Count Frollo ran well first-time out this season at Didmarton and should come on for that run. Prohus Yank ran an incredible race in a Ludlow Hunter Chase until unseating at the last when upsides Barton Snow. However, he was well beaten at Leicester subsequently. Fortuneville won well at High Easter and looks the type to improve.
Assuming Great Valley does not run, the best of the entries in the concluding Members are Blagthebookies, Buzzard Trix, Emotional Roller and Loud and Proud. Buzzard Trix has not had a run this season. Emotional Roller won a Ladies at Ston Easton. Blagthebookies who beat Loud and Proud by half a length in a two-and-a-half mile Conditions Race at Bangor, will be better suited by the longer distance here and is taken to prevail again.
