The South Shropshire takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, with sixty-three runners entered for the six races, commencing at 1.30. Clerk-Of-The-Course Adam Wadlow has advised that watering will take place during the week to provide good ground on the day.
Goffs sponsor the opening GB Bonus four- and five-year-old Maiden over two-and-a-half miles. Seven of the ten entries have already run and the best of them on form may be Ocean View and Maitre D’Oudairies. Maitre D’Oudairies ridden and trained by Josh Newman came fourth in a good race at Maisemore Park. The Gina Andrews trained Ocean View was second to Avichi In The Park at Shelfield Park and that winner went on to win a Restricted on Saturday at Garthorpe. There are also three unraced four-year-olds from the stables of Chris Barber, Josh Newman and Will Biddick, so it’s hard to pick a likely winner.
The Mixed Open is also over two-and-a-half miles with twelve entered. Both A Jet of Our Own and Great Valley are in the five-day declarations for the Warwick Hunter Chase meeting on Friday, so it’s unlikely either will turn up here. However, if either declared they should be good enough to win this. Best of the others are Blagthebookies, Iontach Cheval, Mount Sinai and Premier Fantasy. Blagthebookies won the Members here last month and then came runner-up to Master Templar in a Ladies at Chaddesley Corbett, with Iontach Cheval ten lengths further back in third. Premier Fantasy beat Hugos New Horse in the Mixed Open at the previous meeting here. Mount Sinai has won two Mixed Opens and a Ladies this season and might have the edge here.
The West Mercian Area Conditions Race (Level 1) has eight entries and it’s best to focus on Blagthebookies, Galileo Silver, Iontach Cheval and Kauto No Risk. Galileo Silver won twice here last year and has taken a while to get competitive this season, but he won a Club Members at Woodford last Saturday. Both Blagthebookies and Kauto No Risk have beaten Iontach Cheval in recent runnings. If Blagthebookies runs in this race, his course form may just give him an advantage.
The two runners that stand out in the Restricted are Count Frollo and Jack Black. The former Dan Skelton hurdler Jack Black has looked impressive in winning a Maiden at Maisemore Park and a Restricted at Chaddesley Corbett. Count Frollo finished first in a void Maiden here last year and again showed his liking for the track when winning a Restricted at this course on Easter Monday. On a line through Briskalo who was runner up to each of these in his last two runs, Jack Black gets the vote here.
The best form of the twelve entered for the three-mile Maiden are Corra Bheinn, No Case to Answer and Northern Gem. Corra Bheinn and No Case to Answer each has good placed form this season. The five-year-old Northern Gem has only had one run, but led for a long way in a hot Maiden over
two-and-a-half miles here on Easter Monday and was just over six lengths fourth to Magnifaik. If he stays the extra half mile, he should have the class to win.
The concluding Conditions Race (Level 3) is for Novice Riders and has attracted eleven entries. High Game Royal is also in a Hunter Chase at Warwick on Friday night and would have an excellent chance if he runs here. The others to consider are Jasmin des Blins, Ringsend John, Striking Out and The Yellow Mini. The most reliable of these on recent form is Jasmin des Blins who has won a Maiden and Restricted in his last two races.
