The team responsible for the Wales Area meeting at Machen this weekend deserve to take some time out after the last race to give themselves a communal pat on the back. Scattered across the Principality and even across the border, these are a virtual team, coming together via technology on Zoom calls and messages, with a hardy batch of workers gathering at the course on Sundays to carry out preparations on the track itself. Yet they are heading into their second meeting of the season with a healthy card of entries, a growing social media presence, and the anticipation of yet another good days racing.

The days entertainment kicks off at 2.pm with the NWFAA maiden which has attracted fifteen entries. Heading the field on ratings in this contest is Standupanddeliver who has a rating of 93 and has finished second in his last two outings, One Man Party was also in the shake up on his last outing finishing a close second to Ice Prowler at Ampton in March.

The Conditions Race has half of the field carrying ratings of over one hundred with The Big Breakaway heading the table with a rating of 117. Winner of his last two starts the Leslie Jefford gelding, a son of Getaway will carry a five-pound penalty. Hot on his heels in the ratings is the Luke Price trained Lavorante yet to be out of the first two in his five starts this year, only going down by a neck in his last contest at Paxford just over a week ago. He Is also the winning most horse in the race having won nine of his seventeen starts between the flags.

There are few more prolific horses on the point-to-point circuit than Julian Sheriffs Fier Jaguen who has won fourteen of his twenty-four starts. He is twelve points clear of his nearest rival in the Mixed Open division and will be looking to make amends for his fall at Howick recently. He will need to carry a five-pound penalty in this race. His nearest rival on ratings is the Libertarian gelding Hearts Corner who having scored a hat trick already this season will be looking to add another to his tally but will carry seven pounds extra. One to watch will be the Chris Barber trained Mount Sinai, the dual Howick winner who is aiming for a hat trick and will run off a weight of 11st 7, her penalty being wiped out by her mare’s allowance.

An Intermediate race is supposed to be a stepping stone to Open company but the quality of entrants in this meetings contest reads in the same way as a Conditions race. Only two of the twelve entries have ratings below ninety and they are headed by no less that four runners carrying a rating of 103. Talimar Pearl is in a rich vein of form having been in first four in all four starts this year and won the Cherrybrook Conditions on his last outing, he will however carry a five-pound penalty for his previous efforts. Of the remaining top raters none will carry a penalty in this event and the Josh Newman charge

Dollanstown has an impressive vein of form as he has made his way up the ranks this season. Only a six-year-old the son of Jet Away has won two of his five starts.

A smaller field of entries make up the second Maiden on the card with Taktics who was second at Howick on only her second start being one that catches the eye. As a four-year-old she gets a fourteen-pound allowance and will carry 10 stone 7 as will Sainte Crystal for Chris Barber. Ginderella has been consistent in all his four starts this year and could find himself involved in the finish this time out also.

The Point-to-Point racing finishes with the Flat Race for four- and five-year-olds that has attracted eighteen entries. With many making racecourse debuts this will be a contest where personal choice plays a part in making your pick. However, the breeding of My Way My Day demonstrates plenty of speed in the family. (Golden Horn/High Chaparral).

The ponies will also get their chance to shine on Sunday with two pony races being scheduled. Welsh Pony racing has been the starting point for so many of todays top National Hunt jockeys ,including Ben Jones who had Wales on its feet last weekend as he led into the final stages of the Grand National.

Early arrivals will get a chance to park trackside so make the picnic on Saturday and pack the boot early.

The course is situated at Lower Machen four miles west of Newport NP10 8GA.
