Racing in Wales only a month ago would have seemed impossible, but the rain has arrived in typical fashion and with further rainfall in the forecast the going could change from the official “Good to soft good in places” that it was logged as last Sunday. The team of volunteers (who will not mind me saying are no longer in the first flushes of youth except for one or two) have been hard at work every weekend and the course is looking good with plentiful grass cover. Videos of the course can be found on the Wales Point to Point Facebook Group page.

Racing will start at 12 p.m. so an early start is advised so that one of the excellent viewing spots along the course can be secured. The first race is the Restricted contest which has attracted eight entries. The highest rated of which is the Julian and Claire Sheriff owned Avichi in the Park. The six-year-old has relocated this summer along with the rest of Brad Gibbs and Claire Sheriff’s string from Hertfordshire to the former Dunraven Stud premises in Pyle. This will be their first runner from this new facility, and both horses and staff will appreciate the much shorter commute to Lower Machen. The Avichi gelding will carry a five-pound penalty as will his nearest form rival Henry Bailey’s Sharing is Caring. Sing Like Madonna will benefit from the seven-pound mares’ allowance and ran out a clear winner of her only race in an Irish Point to Point in May.

The Tattersalls Cheltenham GB Pointing Bonus Young Horse Maiden, specifically for four- and five-year-olds has drawn seventeen entries. There are several in the card making their racecard debut and only seven have secured a rating to date. The highest of these is a rating of 91 split three ways between Verdi’s Symphony, Penarthur and Northern Gem. Of these, the Josh Newman charge Penarthur was a promising debutante at Eyton on Severn in May finishing second to Chasing Good Times. It would be remiss not to mention Pennyburn. The four-year-old Ocovango gelding will be making his racecourse debut for Gina Andrews, a name that can never be ruled out in any contest.

The nine runner Men’s Open holds an entry from this years top Hunter Chaser and Aintree and Cheltenham hero Barton Snow. With nine wins from ten starts between the flags the Crow/ O’Shea partnership will be heading into the new season with high hopes for their illustrious charge. His has been awarded a rating of 146 and will doubtless be sent off an odds-on favourite by the course bookmakers. His closest rival on paper is another inmate of the same stable St Cuthberts Cave who was a winner at this meeting last year. The yard also has an entry for Boley Bob another multiple winner last season and also a victor in a Hunter Chase at Kelso. Just Lucky Sivola for Luca Morgan although yet to win between the flags has a consistent record and could be the one to mount a challenge. However, this early in the season things can never been taken for granted and new stars are always waiting in the wings.

The Ladies Open also has an entry from St Cuthberts Cave and should he take this route he would face four rivals all on an equal rating of 95. Hurricane Highway for Eleanor Williams is an ex National Hunt winner and was second in a Hereford Chase in January. This will be his first point to point outing and often the drop in ranks reaps rewards.

The NWFAA Maiden contest has twelve entries with David Brace’s Verdi’s Symphony coming out top on ratings. The gelding also has course experience having finished fourth here at the last meeting in April. Mr Brace also runs Broadway Dreamer a four-year-old having his first start between the flags for Claire Sheriff. The Nathaniel gelding has some experience in bumper races under rules. Ginderella was a neck second on his last outing at Flete Park and could be one to keep an eye on. Libero also has form from late last season.

The closing contest is a flat race for five- and six-year-olds. Only one has any former racecourse experience and that is the Sheriff trained Who’s Your Father who was fourth at this course last time out. His local connections will hope he can go one better this time. With the rest of the field making racecourse debuts it really does become a case of watching the horses in the pre parade ring and making your pick.

The course is situated four miles west of Newport on the A468. NP10 8GA. There will be bacon rolls and hot drinks for all those travelling with horses before the first race of the day with hospitality on offer for owners and connections.
