Dewi Haddock has already claimed the Hands and Heels series this season but will not be content to sit back and let others take the spoils prior to the flag falling on the last of the Welsh meetings this season. All roads lead west this Friday as the second Welsh International takes place at Ffynnon Druidion. Friday is not a common day in the Point-to-Point calendar and as this is the beginning of a Bank Holiday weekend those attending the meeting should expect extra traffic en route as holiday makers head for the coast and the ferry ports.

The young maidens start the show, and this contest gives Dewi the chance of his first bite at the cherry aboard Dean Jones’ Fashion House. The four-year-old last contested a Point-to-Point flat race at Milbourne St Andrew in March and will be carrying the feather weight of ten stone eleven. The highest rated horse in the contest is the John Mathias owned and trained Chief Joseph Ranch who was last seen at Lower Machen.

Ask Dai must be one of the unluckiest horses in training who constantly seems to fall foul of the stewards and has only three wins to his name despite having finished first on many more occasions. Connections will be looking to set the record straight this weekend and the gelding has entries in both the Restricted and Conditions races. Taking the Restricted route would see him carry a five-pound penalty for his former efforts. He does stand highest in the ratings in the Restricted contest and taking this route would avoid a clash with the multiple winner Inchidaly Robin. Tenthousandreasons was a comfortable winner of his Maiden at Lower Machen and the Mickey Bowen charge is very much an unknown quantity as he progresses up the ladder. Doctor Glide finished behind him on that occasion and will be looking to go one better in this contest.

The Mixed Open sees four horses sharing the top rating of 113, two of them trained by Luke Price who is having another successful season with his South Wales based string. Of his charges the useful Lavorante who has won over fifty percent of his starts between the flags will be carrying a three pound penalty and has a formidable form record this season, matched only by stablemate Inchidaly Robin. Hugos New Horse has an illustrious half-brother in the form of Black Corton, and has won in Mixed Open company at Woodford on his last outing. The winning card could however be held by Laura Richardson with Loud and Proud who was a sixteen-length Hunter Chase at Warwick last time out.

The Conditions Race has a handful of horses holding ratings that exceed the century, and it will be the decisions made by two trainers that dictate how many of them take the flag in this meeting as more than one has double entries. One that does not, so is guaranteed to start this race should be attend the meeting, is the Luke Price charge Galudon. He will however carry the heavy weight of twelve stone ten carrying penalties for his five victories this season. This weight will also be carried by Inchidaly Robin and Up for Appeal, something that may well prove a factor in the final results.

The NWFAA Maiden is next on the card with Chief Joseph Ranch holding an entry and also holding the highest rating. Buck’s Dream was third behind Pip Pirrip at Eyton-on-Severn at the beginning of the month and will be looking to improve on that placing to finish off the season. Laura’s Girl is the only other runner who has achieved a rating between the flags. The daughter of Doyen was third last time out at Woodford and will be one of three mares in the race giving her the benefit of a seven-pound allowance.

The meeting closes with a Hunt Members race and Luke Price may keep Lavorante for this contest as he is the highest rated horse of all the entries followed only by the same trainers Lightening Legs; the five year old will have the benefit of a seven pound allowance whilst Lavorante will carry top weight in the field of twelve stone ten  Abbie Wilmott’s Carry on Beauty will be another to benefit from the lighter weight and could progress from her fourth place finish at Lower Machen.

Whatever route owners choose to take with their horses it will be curtain calls on the year for many and they will soon be turned out for the summer before the new season starts again in the autumn giving little time for anyone to have a break.

The course is in the extreme west of Wales four miles from Fishguard at Goodwick. SA64 0LD.
