The historic Lady Dudley Cup is the centre-piece event on a competitive card at Chaddesley Corbett this Saturday (18th April) which has accrued 66 entries with the first race having a scheduled off-time of 2pm.

And one owner hoping to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition will be locally-based Clive Hitchings as Grace A Vous Enki, who sports the colours of his wife Joan, will have a second crack at securing the iconic prize.

Hitchings makes no bones about the fact that he has wanted to win the race for many a moon and is hoping that the 10-year-old can end the long wait with victory on this occasion.

Grace A Vous Enki is unbeaten in an unprecedented 11 races around Larkhill but his sole attempt pointing at racing left-handed at this course in 2024 ended in defeat despite being sent off a red-hot 4-9 favourite for this very prize.

Once again there has to be the inevitable question mark about the gelding’s adaptability at the Worcestershire circuit but on the other side of the coin he is a class act and can overcome any doubts concerning racing this way around.

His trainer Chris Barber said: “He is is in very good form ahead of Saturday and we have prepared him especially for the race. A drop of rain would not go amiss but the horse is quite versatile so we go there with high hopes.”

If Grace A Vous Enki underperforms then the rival most likely to take advantage could be Ocean Drifter, who boasts winning form at the circuit and comes into the race relatively fresh.

Barber holds a tidy hand in the Restricted contest with recent Maisemore winner Jack Black and Skeeter Rock, who scored well at Larkhill last month. Both appear to be on the upgrade and should be kept on the right side.

Sainte Crystal would almost certainly have been involved in the finish on her debut at Siddington as she was upsides the winner until paying the penalty for a novicey mistake at the second last fence. She can make her presence felt in the Mares’ Maiden.

Barber commented: “She is not the biggest mare but had jumped nicely enough on her debut until getting the penultimate fence wrong. Hopefully her confidence has not been dented.”

Kings Affinity has form lines in Ireland that read more like an alphabet but he has been transferred to Barber and is just the type who can be turned around by the move across the Irish Sea to Herefordshire.

However, he faces a stiff test on his British debut from the Tom Lacey-trained Herbies Sock, who stayed on in eye-catching fashion at Maisemore. He will definitely be suited by the step up to the three miles on offer.

Separating the Gina Andrews-trained duo – Master Templar and No Risk Des Flos – in the Ladies Open is close to impossible. My pin would just favour Master Templar as he has proved he can handle the track’s undulations in the past.

Malinas Glory provided trainer Hannah Lewis with a comeback winner at Paxford over Easter and has been found another opportunity which looks too good to bypass in the opening Members heat.

Clerk of the course Jim Squires is confident that Good ground will be the order of the day come Saturday and he said: “The course is in cracking condition. There is a drop of rain around and we will water if necessary to maximise conditions for the weekend.”
