The Badsworth and Bramham held their meeting at Askham Bryan this weekend, despite some small the fields there was some useful recruits that turned up on the day, racing on ground described as good to soft. It was an excellent day for southern raiders who took four of the six races on show, with Tom Ellis claiming three of those.
The Yorkshire runners got two wins on the board for the day, the first of which came in the Restricted race courtesy of the warm favorite Camdonian. The winner of a very competitive maiden last time at Charm Park, Camdonian and Christy Furness eased their way to the lead down the back straight and were well in command when his only danger Diaboleo unseated at the last, allowing Busy Street and Secret Pattern to fill the places. Bought from Doncaster sales at the start of the year, the winner made easy work of this small field and can surely progress further “he’s taken to the fences really well, we’ll probably go for the Intermediate at Bedale next” said pilot Christy Furness.
Fresh New Dawn took the Mens Open under in the in-form Thomas Easterby who took off a handy 5lb. The pair led from flag fall and gradually pulled well clear of their only other rival Pillowman who came home in a remote second. The winner returned to some very excited owners “we had El Tornado last year and he won, now we have this lad and he’s fantastic!” said a delighted Cassy Bell who got the former chaser from Olly Murphy’s last year and could be suited by the spring conditions.
The Open Maiden would go the way of Joe O’Shea’s most recent purchase Iskander Pecos, piloted by Huw Edwards. The pair made steady progress through the race albeit looking under pressure a long way from home, however stamina kicked in two from home for this well bred son of Jeu St Eloi and the pair forged clear after the last to win by 3 lengths “he’ll stay further than Red Rum this lad” enthused his winning trainer who was running his new charge for only the second time after leaving Tom Ellis’s yard. Crobally Boy and Joe Wright travelled well through the race and will soon be winning back in second, whilst First One d’Ana and Nick Orpwood filled third.
The Tom Ellis had a very fruitful weekend with ten runners and ten winners, a clean sweep across the country with three of those winners coming at Askham Bryan. The first of which was in the opening Conditions race with the progressive Fairly Famous and Gina Andrews, the pair led a long way from home and cruised to success, with Rocket Lad and Thomas Easterby back in second, whilst Ridelonglivelong was third under Rosie Howarth. This was the third victory of the season for the winner and looks as though he can progress further.
The Ladies Open saw Gina Andrews partner General Arrow to win, the pair set a good pace with runner up Cracking Find, however it was Cellar Vie and Pippa Brown who gave the favourite a scare back in second. Waited with well in rear Cellar Vie made good headway throughout and finished strongly after the last despite jumping right and should be noted in future on easy tracks, however the favourite dug deep on the run in to hold on, with Cracking Find and Ellie Holder in third.
The final race was a Novice Riders race and would complete the Ellis hat trick under Ellie Holder. Champagne Noir always looked in command and quickly pulled clear of The Dubai Way under Felix Barlow who looked laboured in second.
