A massive Easter Saturday crowd at Bitterley went to battle with the course bookmakers but despite four winning favourites the layers still went home with the biggest smiles.
Pointing’s number one bookie Mark Hill summed up the afternoon by saying: “There was a big turnout and we were really busy all afternoon taking bets albeit most of them being fivers and tenners – but that is the norm at the holiday weekend meetings nowadays
“We got off to a bumpy start and the book was losing after the first three races, however, we got it back on the last three races with a 6-1 chance winning the penultimate contest being the best result of the day.”
On the track itself there were doubles for riders Sam Burton and Zac Baker while Jess Stewart partnered her first pointing winner following a wait of almost six years.
It was a particularly memorable meeting for Burton as he belatedly partnered his first success of the season after the Nicky Sheppard-trained Samba Mambo landed the PPORA Members Restricted contest at the expense of Queenhill.
And there were plenty of members of winning syndicate The My Little Pony Partnership on hand to welcome the game five-year-old back into the number 1 circle with a thunderous cheer.
Sheppard said: “There are 13 in the partnership and it looks like most of them are here. They are a really enthusiastic bunch who include Jim Squires and Judith Healey – both deserve the success as they work so tirelessly for the West Mercian courses.”
She added: “Huw Edwards rode the mare last time and suggested that we fit her with cheekpieces. He was spot-on as the headgear has worked to perfection as she kept galloping all the way to the line.”
For Burton it was a welcome winner and in true London buses style he later followed up when Try The Money found what was required to get the better of favourite Myfanwy’s Magic for the Five Years Old And Over Maiden.
Winning trainer Jane Allfrey commented: “The horse and rider deserved that as they had a disagreement and parted company at Howick last month but fortunately there was no repeat performance on this occasion.”
Baker kicked off the card with a short-priced brace initiated by 4/5 favourite Kauto No Risk, who proved too good for Iontach Cheval after lifting the Members race by seven lengths.
The 10-year-old’s trainer Jo Priest said: “His owner John Hargreaves has waited five years to have a runner in this race so he is over the moon. There are plenty of options for the winner coming up as he wants decent ground.”
Francesca Poste’s Glancing Hill completed Baker’s two-timer with a smooth success over sole rival Dr Oakley in the PPORA Members Conditions Race. There was 15 lengths between the pair where it mattered.
Jess Stewart rode her first Rules winner when The Brickey Ranger sprang a 28-1 shock at Hereford last month and ended a long spell without a victory pointing after Est Illic came to her rescue in the Novice Riders’ contest.
She reported: “I had my first ride in a point to point when I was 16 and I am now 22 so I’m not doing it before time and it finally feels absolutely brilliant to reach that landmark.”
Spanish Darling and Oxo Called hogged the head of betting market in the concluding bumper as both were sent off 7-4 joint favourites with the former gaining the upper hand in the closing stages under a well-timed ride from Harry O’Dwyer.
Victorious trainer Luca Morgan declared; “I think the horse has a future as he is built to jump hurdles and fences. There is more to come as he works like a nice horse at home.”
